The National Police Commission (NPC) yesterday approved the transfer of Kurunegala DIG Kithsiri Jayalath to the Puttalam Division.
Although the NPC first approved his transfer to the Trincomalee Division on August 2, it was cancelled on the same day.
NPC Secretary Nishantha Weerasinghe told Daily Mirror the DIG’s transfer had been recommended by the IGP on the request of the CID.
“DIG Jayalath was transferred to facilitate the ongoing investigations being carried out into incidents in the Kurunegala District including the case against Dr. Shafi,” he said. The CID is currently investigating the DIG’s involvement in arresting Dr. Shafi on false charges.
Meanwhile, NPC yesterday approved the promotion and appointment of SSP Buddhika Siriwardana as the DIG in-charge of the Kurunegala District.
SSP Siriwardana served as the Administrator-in-charge at the Police Headquarters prior to his appointment and had also acted as the police spokesman.
