Wellawaya Police said that a person has been arrested in Weerasekaragama, Malewanayaya in Wellawaya on March 9 in connection into an inquiry of a person who appeared in a Selfie near a cannabis cultivation which has been posted on Facebook.
It has been revealed that the arrested person (36) is a resident of Weerasekeragama, Malewanayaya, Wellawaya. The suspect had posted a selfie taken in the cannabis chena on facebook last week. On a tip-off received by OIC of Wellawaya Police IP, C. P. Gunasekera arrested the suspect in the cannabis chena after conducting an investigation.
It was revealed by a Police Officer who participated in this raid that 115 cannabis plants which has grown upto about 7 feet were uprooted and burnt. Arrested suspect was scheduled to be produced before Wellawaya Magistrate yesterday (10) .
Wellawaya Police are conducting further investigations in this regard and the raid was conducted by OIC IP C. P. Gunasekera of Wellawaya Police together with Police Sergeant Sanath (1607), PC Bandara (54864), PC Upali (41898), PC Indika (67983) and PC Nandana (67093) on the instructions of SP of Monaragala Division Sujith Wedamulla and ASP H. C. Ovitigama.
