The highest number of COVID-19 cases recorded within a month was reported last month, sources said.
While, more than 20,000 such cases had been reported in the country, 6,236 infected cases were identified in the Colombo District alone.
A total number of 20,696 cases were detected in January, 2021 while 17,472 and 18,838 cases were reported respectively in November and December last year.
Among the highest cases found in January were; 3,807 cases in Gampaha, 1,590 in Kalutara, 1,524 in Kandy, 958 in Kurunegala, 915 in Galle, 626 in Ratnapura, 535 in Matara, 514 in Kegalle, 488 in Matale and 411 in the Ampara Districts. Meanwhile, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country exceeded the 800 mark for the fifth consecutive day, on Monday. Accordingly, the total number of infected persons in the country stood at 64,983 as of yesterday.
