The National Police Commission, an independent body responsible for the Sri Lanka Police Service recently received four new members, including its new Chairman, for tenure of three years in its fifth commission from March 2019, the Daily Mirror learns.
President Maithripala Sirisena on the recommendation of the Constitutional Council appointed retired senior member of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service and previous commission member Mr. Thilak Kollure as the new Chairman.
Mr. Kollure has been a long standing reputed administrator of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service and a highly committed personality in the related field.
In addition, three new members have also been appointed on the recommendation of the Constitutional Council (CC) by President Maithripala Sirisena in the first week of February.
They include Former Senior Deputy Inspectors General of Police Gamini Navaratne and Asoka Wijetilleka.
Mr. Gamini Navaratne was the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Administration at the time of his retirement and had been acting for the IGP on numerous occasions. He had also handled police duties during numerous elections in the country.
Former Senior DIG Asoka Wijetilleka, also holds the internationally recognized appointment as the Secretary General International Police Association (IPA) and continues to function as the Senior Advisor to the Asia Affairs Bureau (AAB) based in Macau.
He was one time the Head of Interpol Sri Lanka and Head of CID. He is also the current President of the Association of Chiefs of Police, which is the only Police Organization affiliated to the Organization of the Professional Associations of Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, another senior administration officer had been appointed by the President whose name was yet to be announced by the Commission.
The formal announcement of new members is believed to be made on Thursday when the new Chairman will summon the fifth commission, government sources said.
Meanwhile, the previous members Prof. Siri Hettige, Mrs. Savithri D Wijesekere and Mr. Y. L. M. Zawahir along with previous NPC Secretary Mr. Saman Dissanayake will continue to render their services for the fifth commission too.
The new commission will expire in February 2022.
