While the government should not pull out from its commitment to the primary and secondary education sector, more opportunities should be granted for the private sector at higher education level, said former Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Director General Professor Rohan Samarajiva.

He made these remarks while explaining about his latest book which he has co-authored with well known journalist, C.J.Amaratunga.

His latest work, an economic strategy book (in Sinhala) was launched on August 6, at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies.

The book focuses on the transport sector, education, telecommunication, water and electricity and discusses how these five sectors can be developed in methods that are compatible with the socioeconomic and sociopolitical practicalities in the country.

Commenting further, Prof. Samarajeewa said that the unbalanced opportunities available in the education sector pave way to a black economy in the country.

He pointed out that primary students should be given the opportunity to go to a school which is closer to their homes without recruiting students on a merit based system.

Endorsing the system of Madya Maha Vidyala (Central schools) Prof. Samarajeewa was of the view that higher education sector should be more open to the private sector.

Meanwhile former deputy governor of the Central Bank W.A. Wijewardena delivering the key note speech said that expert opinion, discussion with society and prioritizing concerns are the key steps to find a solution for economic issues prevailing in a country.
