Overseas Realty Ceylon PLC, the owner manager and developer of the World Trade Center Colombo (WTC), is displaying a giant Vesak lantern at its premises to celebrate this year’s Vesak festival.
As UN Day of Vesak is hosted in Sri Lanka, it will be the first time we celebrate the Vesak Festival internationally allowing us to showcase our creativity and rich Buddhist culture to the world.
The giant lantern at WTC is built to commemorate the gifting of the Jayasirimaha Bodhi sapling to King Devanampiyatissa. The main lantern which is 35 feet in height is flanked by 78 planetary lanterns and can be viewed from all three levels of the WTC lobby at different angles.
The Vesak lantern uses VSD technology to control the speed of the drive unit along with LED lamps which helps to reduce the electricity consumption for the lantern by over 50 percent.
The main lantern and the 78 accessory lanterns are all decorated with intricate carvings around the structure lit by multiple color combinations using the latest technology.
The lantern is voluntarily built by a dedicated team of employees attached to the Facilities Management unit of ORCL as a contribution to the UN day of Vesak. The lantern will be displayed from the Vesak Poya day up to Poson Poya Day and will be open to the general public.
