CHENNAI: The LTTE supremo, Velupillai Prabhakaran, is no more the prime accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. In the first official acknowledgment by India of the LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran's death, a designated court for Tada cases in Chennai has dropped all charges against him, on the basis of a CBI report.

"The case against the absconding accused A1 Prabhakaran, A2 Pottu Amman alias Shanmuganathan Sivasankaran is hereby dropped and the charges against them ordered abated," ruled the designated judge, K Dakshinamurthy, a couple of weeks ago.

The case and charges against Prabhakaran's trusted lieutenant and LTTE intelligence chief Pottu Amman were dropped based on the report filed by the CBI's Multi-Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA), which was formed in 1998 to probe the wider conspiracy behind Rajiv's 1991 assassination. Under Indian law, charges against the accused abate automatically on their death.

On May 18 last year, capping the defeat of LTTE, the Lankan government declared the death of Prabhakaran in battle. Though photographs of the bullet-riddled body of the LTTE leader were released to the world, the island-nation had not yet issued a formal death certificate authenticating his death. In the case of Pottu Amman, Lanka has not furnished any photos or certificates, fuelling rumours all over the Tamil diaspora that the two were still alive.

However, last year, when a case pertaining to the 1989 assassination of the moderate Tamil politician A Amirthalingam came up for hearing, the Lankan police filed a report declaring that Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman were dead.

About six months ago, the MDMA filed a report based on the Lankan government's disclosure, stating that the case could be closed as the two LTTE leaders were dead, as acknowledged by Sri Lanka itself.

Naturally. How can they continue the case when he is dead? A lot of time and money is thus saved. Good thinking, India. But here is old Paradise Island they will try to prosecute even his grandson ,if he had one, for crimes committed by the grandfather!!!!!!!

There is no proof that Pottu Amman is dead, as his body was never found. But I wish he is dead as he is the only other leader who can start that kind of a war again. Still with the Sri Lankan army have established themselves everywhere in the north and the east , and the tamil's lost faith in the LTTE, even there is little possibility for the LTTE to recover even if Pottu is alive.

What about the other suspect KP? Is he off the hook?

This is a very good point. However even without Pottu, there is an apparent risk of LTTE being organised again, under some other big name, if the government of Sri Lanka once again fails to provide them (Tamils) a fair and equal political opportunity.

Gayan in 1983, Sri Lankan army didn't have the necessary power in terms of arms, aircrafts, and also the man power to stop LTTE capturing most parts of the north and East. But now our army is strong enough to take on any terrorist organisation. For LTTE to succeed they have to hold some part of the country. LTTE is in action again in some countries, but we really dont care since they no longer hold any part of our country.

Yes the government of Sri lanka should look after the well being of the tamil people. But even the tamils have to wait 2-3 years as huge ammounts of money has being spent to build the north and east. Government should provide the tamils in that region at least the basic needs.

Forget about pottu amman and LTTE. Militarily dealings are over now. Transnational government is going to be the next real headache for Sri lankan govt in few years. I see it as the biggest intelligent move made by Tamils
