Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayke today said that he would request private sector employers to increase the salaries of their employees similar to the salary increase of government sector employees.

“We have no right to ask the private sector to increase salaries of employees. However, we will request the private sector to increase the salaries in line with the state sector. We hope it will happen though unlikely to happen during the 100-day programme,” he said.

The minister said some of the taxes heaped on the private sector would be removed and the benefit should be given to the employees.  (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Not fit to me a Minister of Finance. This is one that has to be eliminated by the voters at the next general elections.

If you remove some extra burdens (Taxes) on Private Sector, no doubt - they could utilize that money to pay-off their employees same as the Public Servants enjoy.

What about the state pensioners. Only salary increase to government servants will be counter productive to the ruling parties when it come to the next election in 3 months time if the same increase is not given to them. The pensioners who retired before 01.01. 1996 are only getting a small pension and are undergoing a severe hardship with their small pension; sometimes not even enough to cover the medical bills. Hope the Finance Minister will consider the pensioners as well when announcing the salary increase to the state employees.
