Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said yesterday a complaint had been lodged at the Police Headquarters by 21-year-old Thilini Amalka, who is alleged to have slapped a youth at Wariyapola Bus Terminal recently when he had abused her verbally and in sign language.

The girl, employed in the garment sector, had admitted to having slapped the man.

The youth had earlier told Police he had no intention of making a complaint. However he was admitted to the Kurunegala Hospital on Tuesday because of a hearing problem in one of his ears.

The Wariyapola Police had summoned both the girl and the boy and recorded statements over the incident. (Lahiru Pothmulla and Sanath Desmond)

Since when does verbal abuse warrant physical assault?? This means I can go around legally slapping women and beating men for "verbally abusing" me.... haha! now that would be a world.
