A special “Fraud Intelligence Unit” has been setup to monitor all television and print advertisements for their legitimacy and do the relevant investigations when the necessity arise, SSP Maxi Proctor, Head of the Fraud Investigations Bureau (FIB) told Daily Mirror online.

The Intelligence Unit will create a database regarding advertisement and act as a preventive factor for fraudsters of many varieties who daily dupe the general public using advertisements.

Illegal loans, vehicle sales, land sales, suspicions phone numbers and all kinds’ of suspicious advertisements appearing on print and electronic media will be monitored by the Fraud Investigations Bureau in the future and investigated.

By doing so we intend to reduce the illegal activities which are advertisements based and protect the general public, SSP Maxi Proctor said. (Daily Mirror online)

Well doine, SLPD!. Many of Ad companies violating the ethics and produce misinformations but creep though skill of the art. These ad firms must hold responsible for the image and perception build though their creativity in future. We will take them to mat!.

Much awated measure !!!! Must be held for criminal liability because they mislead the poor cosumer, public on behalf of muilty billion bloodsuckers such as milk powder sellers,Insurance companies, herbal soap sellers & many more such pick pocket criminals operate in our country.

Well it's a bit late in the day for them to be doing this. Some of the major companies involved in fraud have been in business for many years. How come nothing was done to monitor these before? Aren't they supposed to be scrutinized well in advance?

There are astrology programmes in TV channels with frauds showing themselves as astrologers. They should also be investigated.

How about applying the same to government misinformation and cheap propaganda over the controlled electronic and print media, such as "Patchavahini" and "Bake house" newspapers.

A proper Office of Communications (Ofcom) is required to regulate the media and advertising industries.
A proper regulatory body is an urgent need in Sri Lanka.
