A tense situation prevailed at Aluthgama on the Galle-Colombo Road after an assault incident this evening.

Heavy traffic was also reported in the area after the protestors blocked the road. No one has been arrested yet.

Ministers Kumara Welgama and Rohitha Abeyagunawardene had visited the scene in an attempt to sort out matters. Minister Welagama’s vehicle was reportedly damaged after it was stoned by the angry crowd. (Text and Pix by Sarath Siriwardene)

why is the minister there to settle a dispute. It's a matter for the police and the law enforcement and the legal system. Things are pretty messed up an politician are responsible and they are trying to repair things on their own. No system. no wonder people keep throwing stones at them.

Why ministers come to a crime scene. allow police to do their job impartially. Now they have to arrest not only the thug who hit the monk but also hooligans who attack the ministers vehicle..

Did he pay any tax on the money he bought the vehicle? Deserve more stones. Again why STF?? Police does not have backbones to handle this situation.

Very strange. Why are Buddhist monks getting beaten up? That means they are not up to their mark. They should command respect from the masses, whether Singhala or Tamil. We have seen monks behaving rudely in recent demonstrations and agitations. That's one reason they loose their respect.
