Police used tear gas to disperse opposition protestors in Maharagama who demonstrated against the arrest of General Sarath Fonseka, some of the protesters said.

The police however denied using teargas but said they had only used water canons to disperse the protesters.

Several such protests were held against the general’s arrest in various parts of the island yesterday as well.

He did what he can do in the battle field. It is his choice to come in to politics after retiring from Army. Whether its threat to the governement or not it is a right that any one should have. I never seen this kind of things happens in our country except the President Premadasas Era. It is the time for Democarcy loving people to Raise there voice against this unjust. If anyone allowing and enjoying the oposition being harasets then this country will surely go towards path that countries like Simbabwe and Uganda has taken. It is happening infront of our eyes...cant you see my friends...Please see whats happening arround with out your political sepectcles at least once..

Freedom of franchise, freedom of expression, access to informatioN.... these are vital organs of a functioning democracy. If MR and company has an iota of intelligent, look at India.

Unfortunately, MR is forcing once a vibrant democracy to a level of Uganda and Zimbabwe.

Tear gas cannot stop the truth! This is the beginning. General SF is The Hero of our motherland. Do you think people will keep quiet when you arrest their hero?

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 03:42 PM

People should have the right to protest and I am glad Magistrates elsewhere have upheld the law and rebuked the police accordingly for arresting them. The answer is to educate these people and let them know the reasons for the arrest of SF who had clearly violated Army rules and it is the Army that had arrested him.

    Friday, 12 February 2010 06:58 AM

exactly. we should be like the Indians on this issue

    Friday, 12 February 2010 08:21 AM

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:42 AM

The people should realize where we are going! What do the following countries have in COMMON: Iran, Libya, Myanmar, China & Russia?

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:42 AM

    "God Bless Srilanka"

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:02 PM

Maharagama is JVP is showcasing its work to Ranil so that JVP will be kept alive by Ranils UNP.Its all connected to a electoral pact desired by JVP for General Elections.
Lankan politics does not breed strange bedfellows but political whores.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:06 PM

Wow !!! Another Victory by the Government. We together shall beat Zimbabwe!!!

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:10 PM

Sri Lanka's reactionary adversaries who revolt in favour of their champion Fonseka and attempt anarchy must be stopped in their tracks.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:14 PM

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:37 AM

why is the police using tear gas if the protests are peaceful...dont they have the right to protest ???? wasting our tax monies

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:20 PM

The JHU is has suddenly gone deaf and dumb on this issue.Old Wimal W looked embarassed on TV when he addressed this issue.Anyone with brains will realize that the government has made a monumental blunder and has given enough momentum to the opposition before the General Elections.
Typical Sri Lankan style : "From the frying pan into the fire"

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:27 PM

Protests should not stop till SF is released. What is Ranil doing? This is the best chance for him to prove whether he can lead the opposition for the cause of democracy and freedom for Srilankans!

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:29 PM

My dear King & company, actually we now do not need tear gas to cry for our Sri Lanka. You and your family is messing it up in grand style.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:35 PM
