Relatives of a man who died while in police custody this morning have raised suspicion over the circumstances which led to his demise despite the police claiming he died of a heart attack.

The 34 year old man, identified as Nalaka Peiris, died at the Kottawa police station this morning after being arrested last night over his inability to produce identification documents.

According to the police the victim was wanted over several robberies but his friends and relatives said he was not a criminal. The relatives who had visited the police station this morning were told he had died while in police custody after suffering a heart attack.

His body was taken to the Kalubowila hospital this morning. Relatives and friends of the victim had gathered outside the police station today and are now demanding an inquiry over his death. (Daily Mirror online)
