Police to appoint 18 DIG’s

The Police Departments is to appoint 18 Deputy Inspector General (DIG) officers within the next two weeks, the Police Headquarters said today.

58 Senior Superintendents of Police (SSP) were interviewed to select suitable officers for the positions. The list of the officers selected to the positions will be sent to the Public Services Commission next week.

The appointments are to be given following the approval of the names of the selected officials by the commission.

The selected officers have proven their records by leading the police to counter a number of crimes, engaging with the public while developing a good relationship with them as well as high quality discipline record.

A number of senior DIG’s retired from the police service last year. These officers will be appointed to fulfil the vacated posts. There are 42 police divisions within the country and for each division a DIG or an SSP is appointed to coordinate the activities and tasks of the police.

The Department is currently going through a massive restructuring programme to increase the capabilities and efficiency of the department. (Supun Dias)
