A tensed situation developed in Rajagiriya a short while ago after police began dismantling a stage erected for a rally scheduled to be held today by UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasingha.

The police had brought in water canons to disperse a mob that had gathered in the area to vent their anger at the move.

The protestors had sat across the street, demanding their equipment back and the police later returned the items in order to defuse the tension.

According to the UNP, the police had also begun removing posters and cut outs of the UNP Leader which were pasted close to the stage. "The police cannot do this as we had already obtained permission from the Elections Commissioner to hold this rally. The police need to give us an explanation," UNP Kotte Organiser Shiral Lakthilaka told Daily Mirror online.

The UNP group at the location has begun putting up the stage once again in preparation for the rally which is scheduled to be held at 3.00 p.m. today.

When contacted, Police Spokesperson S.P. Prashantha Jayakody said that he was unaware of any such incident. (Daily Mirror online)

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 10:40 AM

How the police have acted when goons were stoning Sirasa head office and in dismantling the stage of Ranil. What a contrast.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 10:41 AM

If government is really confident of securing 2/3 why all these nonsense? one would wonder about heir cofidence now??

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 10:46 AM

" UPFA + Rajapakses are getting desperate with defeat looming before their very eyes" - Bahahaha...

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 11:05 AM

Alas! Death of DEMOCRACY in Sri Lanka!

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 11:28 AM

    Good job the Police did.
UNP can get free propaganda on the news tonight, Otherwise it is a complete washout.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 11:52 AM

On 8th MR will Dismantle Ranil completely !.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 10:37 AM

This is the type of DEMOCRACY we expect if we ELECT a UPFA government.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 12:08 PM

I am the king need my permission first, guys remember I am the king

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 12:14 PM

I totally agree with R. Wicks. The country is heading for a dictatorship.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 12:16 PM

This shows how weak the opposition is. They can't even tackle the police. How are they ging to run a country? Where do they stand???

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 12:58 PM

Where's democracy? What human rights? Does the authorities take us, the general public for a grand joke..?

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 05:13 PM

Ayanthi is very much awake, and knows what she is saying. Indika, let's meet on the 8th, for the UNF celebrations.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 06:39 PM

Ranil, very soon you will be next door to Sarath Fonseka?

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 06:43 PM

So, yet another attempt to smear the govt.?

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 07:31 PM

The police is there to protect law and order. Looks like they now protect only 'low and odor.'

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:04 PM

So embarrassed to be a Sri Lankan. What's happening right now in the country, is pathetic. I really cannot understand why such an order was given to the police, to do this kind of awkward act.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 11:18 PM

Will voters 'dismantle' Ranil? 'Only time will tell.'

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:30 AM

Ayanthi, Wake up !!! Sleeping in the day light is not a good habit !!!!

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 08:59 AM

Where is the freedom guaranteed by the Constitution? And is this the fair conduct promised by the government? Finally, this stupid behaviour of the government has degraded standard of human rights to that of Zimbabwe and North Korea!

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:06 AM

The elections rally has to take place. or else the election rallies of the UPFA will also come under the similar fate or worse.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:17 AM

UPFA + Rajapakses are getting desperate with defeat looming before their very eyes.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:18 AM

You greedy MR & the clan. Why you people so scared of the opposition? You have got a 1.8 million majority. The next meeting you propose to address, lightning will strike definetely. Wait and see.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:18 AM

Two sets of law by the police one for the opposition another fof the govt.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:20 AM

I wonder if the UPFA will lock up Ranil with Sarath Fonseka and they may both have to face the army military tribunal. Gotabaya might arrange that as he is THE MOST qualified defence secretary!!!

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:21 AM

Two people the govt harrass most are - 1) Ranil 2) Sarath Fonseka. If the govt are so confident of winning, this is not the treatment it shd give to the opposition. Why dont the police also not dismantle and disrupt, and disallow loudspeakers etc. of the govt rallies.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:24 AM

Because lighting will strike you first before you burst a blood vessel. Be patient man, you backing all the discarded retired horses no ? result is inevitable, humble pie alright !

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:25 AM

Of course, this is SL. UNP's policy since 77 was just that no one was there to protest & cry foul. All were hiding under beds scared of terror squads of the unp goons.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:28 AM
