The Excise Department said yesterday that the “Kama- Colombo” nightclub did not possess a valid liquor licence and was functioning illegally at the time of the alleged assault on a youth on Saturday.

“They were functioning completely illegally. The liquor license of Kama- Restaurant, at No. 32B, Sir Mohomed Macan Markar Mawatha, Colombo 3, was suspended in June. Thereafter they had no authority to function as a club”, said Excise Superintendent Prabath Jayawickrema.

Jayawickrema said that the liquor licence was suspended at the request of the original holder of the licence.

“The licence was suspended at the request of the original holder of it, and that means it’s a complete cancellation. They cannot function as a club or sell alcohol within it,” he said.

Jayawickrama added that the law enforcement authorities of the area had the right to ensure that the club did not operate after being informed of the suspension.

“We don’t issue or extend liquor licenses without the recommendation of the local police station, and upon suspension they are informed of it” he said.

Hey Bravo for the officials at Excise Dept they were sleeping all this time , at least now tale a list of all the commercial establishments in the liquor trade to see if they are legal. Looks like its a VIP who got bumped at KAMA .

    Mr. Thursday, 11 July 2013 05:20 AM

this is a Buddhist country, how come selling liquor is legal in this land.

Rata Haraka Tuesday, 09 July 2013 08:20 AM

What I wonder is, how did the whole thing shift from "a young boy getting beaten up by bouncers outside a nightclub" to "Kama doesn't have liquor license and is operating illegally"? The other story lost steam? No interest?

    chams Tuesday, 09 July 2013 05:08 AM

Good to see Excise Dept still in existence and they say so once in a blue moon!

    Fayad Tuesday, 09 July 2013 05:08 AM

Has this incident opened up a Pandora's box or will the box be shut closed sooner. Probe further into all such night clubs.

sri lakan system Tuesday, 09 July 2013 03:57 AM

This night club just close to Tempel Trees, nobody noticed whether it is illegal or not.Look very funny.

    Something is wrong somewhere.

    A Sri Lankan Tuesday, 09 July 2013 03:17 AM

I can surely tell that Kama is such a shitty place.
It must also be said that the place was said to close for 2 weeks "DUE TO MAINTENANCE". How misleading that is!! They might have planning or working out on the liquor license expiry during those weeks.

Just Another Citizen Tuesday, 09 July 2013 03:12 AM

Our brilliant Government Departments at work. The club has been in existence for so long. I'm sure the cash under the table wasn't paid for the Excise Department to suddenly wake up.

Thomas Ranger Tuesday, 09 July 2013 03:09 AM

Mr. Excise Superintendent, please tell us one thing that is legal in the country, will you. As for the law enforcement authority, namely our heroic Police. Oiled palms and money talks.

    OMG Tuesday, 09 July 2013 03:09 AM

It will be no time till the policemen who did the arresting are punished for trespassing.

    Drunkard Tuesday, 09 July 2013 02:54 AM

I have no doubt they will sue for all illegal things and punish the owners and whoever attacked the boy. Then they will proceed to check all clubs for the proper license and take proper legal action. We will not face any issues in the clubs in future.

Nihal Amarasekera Tuesday, 09 July 2013 02:32 AM

Now this came to light purely because the “Bouncers” thought it fit to assault a youth after liquor & it was blown in the media. What were the authorities doing all this time without taking action on an unauthorized night club? Just tip of an ice berg, wrong doings galore in the society with political patronage

Porky Pig Tuesday, 09 July 2013 02:05 AM

You had a wait till a boy was beaten to realize this. We are being just told what is at the tip of the iceberg. Please tell us more, Mr. Policemen.
