The funeral of a Sri Lankan student who was killed in Sheffield as he worked his final shift has taken place in Nawala on Wednesday.

Thavisha Lakindu Peiris, 25, was found stabbed in his car in Southey Crescent on the night of 27 October.

His body was brought to Sri Lanka last Monday (18) through the sponsorship of his employer in the UK and through donations by some sympathizers in the UK.

He was completing the shift before starting a new job as an IT consultant.

BBC correspondent Charles Haviland said more than 100 family and friends attended the funeral in Sri Lanka. Two people have been charged with his murder and are due in court in June.

Mr Haviland said Mr Peiris's uncle paid tribute to his nephew during the service and described how a book of Buddhist teachings was found with him when his body was discovered.

The Sri Lankan national had been working at a pizza takeaway in Halifax Road after graduating from Sheffield Hallam University in 2011.
