Chinese national fined Rs.100,000

A Colombo Court today imposed a fine of Rs.100,000 on a Chinese national who pleaded guilty for selling foreign liquor without a permit and possessing a stock of illegally imported cigarettes.

The accused, Chang, was arrested by the Kollupitiya Police at a business outlet in Kollupitiya with 47 bottles of foreign arrack and 600 illegally imported cigarettes.

When the Chinese national was produced before Colombo Fort Magistrate Kanishka Wijeratne, defence counsel P.C. de Silva and Sudarshani Gunaratne who appeared for the accused stated that their client had possessed the concerned amount of liquor and cigarettes for his own use.

However, the defence counsel admitted that their client would plead guilty to the charges. Having considered the submissions, the Magistrate ordered the accused pay fine of Rs.100,000. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

HOW ON EARTH COULD THOSE BLACK COATED PROFESSIONAL, LICENSED LIERS STINKINGLY LIE BEFORE COURTS, THAT THE ACCUSED KEPT AT HIS BUSINESS PREMISES[ NOT AT HIS REIDENCE) 47 FOREIGN LIQUR BOTTLES AND 600 CIGARETTES FOR IS OWN CONSUMPTION. A STATIC LAWYER OTHRWISE HE SHOULD SHIVER TO SAY THIS TYPE OFSHAMEFUL LIES MERELY FOR A PAYEMNT. WHAT A PROFESSION.

Fine is not enough said and done. Need a proper investigation to catch all involved in the importation process and that the chinese man should be deported. This is a buddhist country and the law should be really strict to prevent similar occurence!.

I wonder what “visa” issued to this VIP. Are we going to deport him? There are around 10,000 Chinese passport holders in the country with only a handful with business visa! Rest on tourist visa for long time.
