The Navy recovered the body of a seven-year-old girl from a canal in Narahenpita early today while two teenage boys were arrested on suspicion, Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said.

SP Rohana said the girl had gone missing last night while returning after a church function at Siddhartha Road, Colombo 5.

He said according to initial investigations the suspects had taken the girl away promising to show her another perahera.

The body was recovered by the Navy following a request made by the police. The victim was identified as Krishna Kumar Dushanthani. (Pix and tex Sanath Desmond)

Never heard this type of crimes committed by teenagers, as much as the government is responsible the parents are responsible as well. Law enforcement and the legal system needs a complete overhaul. Feel for the little girl and her family. This incident has shaken me and I'm sure it has many in SL as well.

Black Mamba Monday, 02 July 2012 01:53 AM

No it's better to have their thingamajigs cut off and send a positive message to the rest of the perverts in the country. The authorities dilly dallied much too long!!!

backstreet boys Monday, 02 July 2012 03:47 AM

too many perverts on the street and the police are blind...thats why these events are increasing day by day !

    Sue Sunday, 01 July 2012 02:10 PM

The present government must be sent home before the country can start its rehabilitation program.

buffaloa citizen Monday, 02 July 2012 05:16 AM

Absolute rubbish...next you will say that all women must wear the burhka and wear chasity belts to walk on the road. The problem lies with the culture of criminality practiced by the very top to the very bottom. The stink is terrible.

    Nisal Monday, 02 July 2012 05:38 AM

Criminals are receiving royal patronage and are above the law, and the country has gone to the dogs

    azath Monday, 02 July 2012 06:00 AM

you need more victims to realize the truth buffaloa

    aparent Monday, 02 July 2012 07:31 AM

what were the parents doing ?????????? letting a 7year alone....shouldn't they be more responsible of their child than anybody else.
Also , if you have children & don't them to watch whats on TV , why do you want to watch the same? do something constructive during that time. Spend more time with the kids.Of course there are better things to do than watch tv together.....

    manpei Tuesday, 03 July 2012 04:02 AM

more importantly what were the parents of the 2 boys doing? they are still kids themselves. Probably blaming teledramas, porn sites the govmnt etc and not their children.. Typical srilankan behaviour.. our children are never bad or wrong.. something or someone always makes them do these things. Ape lamai nang ehema naa ne ane.

    Tony Tuesday, 03 July 2012 05:05 AM

Anyone else read these ignorant comments about banning everything and politicizing this problem, and realize that this is one society that will continue to go backwards for a long, long, time??

    Mark Tuesday, 03 July 2012 05:40 AM

Also perhaps? It should START with relaxing our mindset about hard core ideas. What is the difference between sri lanka and afghanistan under the taliban anyway? Very little.

    Mark Tuesday, 03 July 2012 05:42 AM

Blame the poor parenting choices. Keeping our children in the dark about sex and morals

    Maureen Tuesday, 03 July 2012 05:42 AM

Well. What more can you expect from typical Sri Lankan youth? They are a rotten lot aren't they?

Political Illiterate Sunday, 01 July 2012 10:41 AM

Dauntless, you appear to be very unpatriotic in you assessment. We got rid of the greatest menace - the LTTE tigers! and you call us responsible for this. No way. This is the problem of somebody else; May be the TV stations. Teenagers should be banned from TV and they should only do studeies upto 20 years old! After that they can see TV when they go to UNI to Ragg all the students!

    Grumpy Sunday, 01 July 2012 07:20 AM

I Know her father... and I was there this morning! Sad situation... the PERVERTS should be shot .... there on that point

Saliya Wicks Sunday, 01 July 2012 07:12 AM

The two boys arrested would have molested the girl.

    jehan Sunday, 01 July 2012 07:57 AM

What kind of society we are living. Government must ban the all teledrams which encourgae sex love for underage and even elders and counsiling and educating people and drama producers to think beoyond sexually encouraged love and towards real love.

    DAVE Sunday, 01 July 2012 08:23 AM

This is what happen when the Government is not punishing the culprits.
All cultures are changed due to the government inability impose tough punishment for Culprits.
Drug Dealers, Underworld Thugs, Mafia Groups, can change the mind of peaceful people.

    gamaya Sunday, 01 July 2012 08:48 AM

teledramas telecasted in all channels shall be blamed.
they brings sex in to the TV room where a familly having young kids sit togather

    fairo Sunday, 01 July 2012 08:55 AM

    god knows then us

    Nilame Sunday, 01 July 2012 09:34 AM

The culprit(s) should be castrated in public and taken on a perahera with the gonads tied around the neck before being thrown into the same canal.

    Dauntless Sunday, 01 July 2012 09:48 AM

the root cause is not punishing criminals even when they are caught red handed. Right from the top, our systems are there to protect the criminals and not to punish them. Teledramas too should be scrutinized but the larger problem is with the ruler. When law and order has gone to the dogs, when the first citizen itself protects thugs and goons what can you expect???
Truly sad to see the levels this country has gone to. Pointless boasting about our culture, history when a little girl can't take a stroll without falling prey to sex predators! Find the culprits and Hang em! No mercy for killers!!!!

    Mahajanaya Sunday, 01 July 2012 09:53 AM

Ane paw podi kella. Very beautiful girl, I was there when the body was taken... Ane paw.. Culprit should hang in a public this is what will happen when the teenagers watching porn video and other love stores in TV stations.

    Andy Sunday, 01 July 2012 06:43 AM

what the hell is going on??? to whom to blame??

    Leslie Sunday, 01 July 2012 10:50 AM

Is this the first time no is this last time no ...or noooooo

Motta Loks Sunday, 01 July 2012 11:10 AM

Hi Dauntles.....Very, very ture,,,When the leaders commit such large crimes , manupulate murders and all serious crime and then promote or protect such culprits, what hope does such innocent young victims have,

Talk from the Boss/Bosses is cheap..Talking the talk, any fool can do..Let us see them walking the walk with example and deeds, with no hidden and corrupt agendas..If not, very, very soon, all of us are going to tekl these leaders where they can get off, by vote or other means.

    Yehiya-Jeddah Sunday, 01 July 2012 11:27 AM

Arabian law only reduce the crime. Police & law officers politizied. We shame of country.

    shace-UK Sunday, 01 July 2012 11:22 AM

Banning teledrama is not the answer, there is internet and enough proxy's to access unwanted sites. the kids are more intelligent than the adults.....only option is educate the kids whats right and wrong....they need to be educated proper sex education...and parents please dont leave your young kids on their own....and do not trust anyone....

    Yehiya-Jeddah Sunday, 01 July 2012 11:28 AM

I am agree with u.Very shame state tv dramas 7-9 in night.

Calistus Jayatilleke Sunday, 01 July 2012 12:12 PM

Tele Dramas or movies have nothing to do with such behaviour of the perverts. When people see rapists, drug dealers, murderers enjoying with the help of powerful politicians, they feel that those belong to privileged class in this country. Further, those who talk of ushering a "Dharma Raajya" are no better sitting in Parliament behaving worse then laymen.

    saranga Sunday, 01 July 2012 12:34 PM

hang on everyone wants to ban here,,,, it has never worked any where in the world in fact banning will lead to more issues,,,, what they shoud do is punish people and review the system and educate youth and society at large,, also perhaps relax our mindset about hard core ideas

Kiris Baba Amaray Sunday, 01 July 2012 01:10 PM

What a crime? The Govt. says that they have irredicated the terrorisum but worst things are happening now. The crimes are increasing, it is also the responsibility of the present Govt. Laws should be strictly enforced. These two guys should be hanged for sure.

Yohan Perera Sunday, 01 July 2012 01:56 PM

    Friends,

The culprits are around the age of 16 and 18... This is not something we have ever heard before... Something is really wrong...
