The admission to the Grade One at the Colombo Royal College for the year 2017 had been suspended after the Education Ministry launched a special inquiry into the admission process, sources said.

The inquiry has been launched after complaints from several parties including the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) about the irregularities allegedly taken place during the admission to the Grade One.

The ceremonies to mark the admission to the Grade One for 2017 are to be held in schools islandwide tomorrow (11).

Several attempts to contact the Education Minister and Ministry Secretary failed.

When the writer was DGM EDP of the CEB many moons ago, the RC Principal wanted us check whether the name on the electricity bills (submitted as proof of residency) were genuine. Checks revealed that a fair number were forged. !

What about the parents who stay in rented houses for years, electricity and water bills are always under the name of the owner. In that only the parents who stay in own houses will be entitled to admit.

Scrap this process of going by the radius from the child's residence and having to produce electricity, water bills to justify of the residency. Have a lottery system where the applications in a seal envelope is dropped at a given time and date and have the envelopes drawn out soon after closing in the presence of the Minister/Secretary/school principal and the parents, I guess there would much transparency in this method.

This needs to be verified. It seems that you can a package of false documents needed for Gr 1 applications to popular schools. I don't know how how true this is but will not be surprised if it is true.
