Some 300 university students are facing court cases while 70 are already in remand custody as a result of a crackdown carried on students by the authorities, the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) alleged yesterday.

IUSF Convener Sanjeewa Bandara said more than 1,000 students had been suspended from the universities during the past two years.

He said these students had been penalised for fighting for their rights and vowed the students would go ahead with their protests to safeguard the free education system in the country regardless of the crackdown.

Mr. Bandara said the government was planning to introduce a Bill to set up private universities.

“We are having discussions with parents of school children to work out a plan for joint action,” he said but added that there was no move yet to get school children to join the protests.

Responding to government allegations that these student unions are linked to the Pro LTTE Tamil Diaspora, he said they have no connections with Tamil expatriates.

However Mr. Bandara said the union was closely associated with the Tamil youth in the North. “This is purely for resolving the common problems faced in the education sector but with no other motive,” he said.

When asked whether continuous protests would not disturb their education, he said the union accepted that students attend universities to study but they were compelled to take to the streets when there was no appropriate environment for them to engage in studies. Citing examples he said there are no adequate staff and other facilities in the Management Faculty in the University of Peradeniya. He alleged that the intake of students in the faculty had been reduced to 50 this year when compared with 150 last year. (Yohan Perera)

If these students want it that way they should get it that! They have been given free education and if they are being led the garden path by unscruplous politicians and act as thugs they should be made to pay the price!Let there be discipline so that those who want to study can do so in a peaceful environment.

From free education to free boarding house! How can they value anything given for these nincompoos as everything been free? They go to uni for riot, thuggery, ragging and do politiking. Other countries students goes uni for qualification, education and get their degrees to become professional citizens. Country where I live down under, no free university education as they have to pay back the amount when they get employment through their life and through their nose. Every uni student do part time work in supermarkets, petrol sheds and other menial jobs for their subsistence. They have no time for this kind of nonsense. With all that they produce best professioanls in the world! And nowhere in the world - we have seen this type of thugs and their circuses. How can any country stand on their feet producing such baboons?

Majority of students who are keen on completing their degrees and starting a job is also deprived of continuing their studies due to few rowdies who do not know how to conduct themselves. Some get selected to a stream which has no job prospects or some enter because of district basis and can not complete their studies due to lack of competence and is being stagnated because of repeating the exams couple of times. They turn out to be the culprits who rag inhumanly because of their jealousy and frustration. If you check most of the trouble makers in local universities are Mahapola recipients due to their low family income. Whatever the reason proper punishment should be given to thugs and hooligans.

A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go off in your face. It is one of the few havens remaining where a man's mind can get both provocation and privacy. Main reasons for arrest of students are ragging, damaging property, abductions & fighting with other students. Tell us when did you receive the legal rights for those actions.
