Examinations Department: O/L candidates unaffected by adverse weather

• Spill gates of a few reservoirs still open;  landslide warnings to several areas still effective

The Examinations Department said yesterday students sitting for the GCE Ordinary Level examination were not affected by prevalent adverse weather conditions.  

It said arrangements were initially made for students at two schools in Walapane and Nuwara Eliya Districts to go to the nearest examination centre to sit for the exam as both schools were inundated. However, sources from the department said such arrangements were unnecessary as the areas surrounding both schools returned to normalcy in time for the examination. It further said the flood situation improved as several inundated roads had been cleared as of last morning.   

However, the spill gates of a few reservoirs including Thabbowa, Nachiduwa, Rajanganaya and Inginimitiya are still open and landslide warnings issued in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Kegalle and Ratnapura still effective. 

Meanwhile, DMC Spokesman Pradeep Kodippily said 5,415 individuals belonging to 1,450 families were affected by adverse weather conditions. 

The Meteorology Department said prevailing showery conditions were expected to continue countrywide over the next few days. Showers or thundershowers are expected in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern and Uva  Provinces. Fairly heavy showers of 75-100mm are likely at some places in the Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Western and Southern Provinces and in Mullaitivu, Trincomalee and Batticaloa Districts. Misty conditions are expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central  Provinces during morning hours.
