The government today accused the US of double standards when dealing with human rights stating that it maintains one policy for Israel and another for Sri Lanka.

Acting cabinet spokesman Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told the media at the weekly news briefing that the US government has opposed the UNHRC resolution to send a fact-finding mission to investigate effects of settlements on Palestinian human rights.

“The resolution was passed in the UNHRC with 36 out of 47 supporting the resolution with only the US voting against. There were 10 abstentions. The Israel Foreign Minister has even threatened to consider withdrawing his envoy from UNHRC and severing ties with the body, following its establishment of a fact-finding mission to probe the effects of settlements on Palestinian human rights with the blessings of the US,” he said.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman has further said that he would convene a meeting to discuss the possibility that Israel will not cooperate with the council in their investigation.

“During a meeting with President of Singapore Tony Tan Keng Yam, the Israel FM, Mr. Liberman has reportedly said he would try to persuade countries such as the United States to quit the UNHRC saying that the council was “hypocritical” and should be “ashamed of itself. Only the US called the resolution biased and voted against it which is quite contrast to the policy took in respect of Sri Lanka,” Minister Yapa added.

The US has also rejected four other resolutions brought against Israel and the Europe was divided on voting for and against the resolution.

“The US led west took great pains to pass the resolution against Sri Lanka at the 19th UNHRC session and there was a huge propaganda against Sri Lanka. It is indeed sad and confusing as they have treated Sri Lanka in an extremely hostile manner.” (Sandun A. Jayasekera)

It is Clear that GOSL has taken steps to reconsile the matter which was to be arisen through diplomatic ways & means plus by stating SL stance very clearly. The disadvantage we had was the wrong decision taken by India by ignoring the fate which was going to be faced by Sri Lanka. Due to that matter I am sure that most of the countries who were silent could have voted in favour of SL. However as well as the US, India aslo will have to face worse situations in future.

(Hon) Lakshman Kadirgamar would have seen this coming and would have prevented the US tabling such a resolution - diplomatically, not because of his skills, but also because of the respect the western countries have for him. Prof GL P treated US with utter disrespect by turning down the invitation extended by Mrs.Clinton.

US is trying to spoil the reigon......that is why they were trying hard with India to vote against SL. Sri lankans are not idiots like Libiyans ,Siriyans Americans etc...

sometimes when dealing with countries internationally, you may think you are playing China, Pakistan, India and US cards very astutely, and in the short term you may think that you are beating everybody based on your action, but in the long run, you realize that you could have been very patient in embracing India, and should not have put India against the other countries. Economically, Srilanka will not be able to survive in its own for another 10 years atleast. In order to sustain the economic developments, you have to have an educated labour force, which is not being nurtured by current policies of the government. Country with several ministers talking about serious issues without a single voice, and it backtracks several times, and reliability of the country also goes with many talkings.

Mr. Minister, the difference is that Israel is American's most influential ally. Sri Lanka is NOT! If we were heavily allied with the US they would back us. We became allies with US from 2001 to 2004 but India (especially RAW) made sure that it didn't last. Thats the funny thing. India would never allow a close US-SL relations.

All the while SL government used to recognize Israel as a country and fully support their occupation in Palestine by ignoring their HR violations. When SL gets the pain, we realized how stupid it is to play with these cobras. US & West colonized the whole world through so-called UN, IMF, WB etc.

The Us is Israels guardian. Double standards do not arise.Just because somebody does something,it is not an excuse that we can also do it.This is where we go wrong and must correct ourselves.The foreign embassies must note this down and not issue him visas to visit.
