Tissa Attanayake discharged from ‘forged document’ case

Former General Secretary of UNP, Tissa Attanayake, was discharged from the case filed against him for allegedly preparing forged documents, by Colombo High Court Judge Vikum Kaluarachchi today.

The case was filed against him for allegedly displaying a fraudulent document to the media during the last Presidential Election for the purpose of allegedly affecting the result of then common candidate Maithripala Sirisena.  

The accused had been charged under Section 3(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act No. 56 of 2007.

The Attorney General alleged Tissa Attanayake committed an offence under Section 3(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act No. 56 of 2007 by inciting racial or religious hatred among ethnic communities.

The AG has listed 15 persons including President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as witnesses in the case.

However, during the April 04 hearing of the case the prosecution and defence in the case had agreed to resolve the matter.

The Counsel appearing for the Prime Minister and the President who were named as the first and second witnesses of the case also informed the Court that they had no objections to resolve the matter.(Yoshitha Perera)
