Parties want EC Chairman to continue in office

Representatives of several political parties who attended a meeting with officials attached to the Elections Commission (EC) yesterday had requested its Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya not to step down from chairmanship, Daily Mirror learns.

The officials representing SLFP, SLPP and UNP had requested the EC chief to remain in the post until his tenure spanning five years ended in November 2020.

However, the EC Chairman had already conveyed to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya that he informed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa of his intention to step down from the post. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya is not longer suitable for the job. He has refused to make an official request about the US citizenship of Gota to the US Embassy. The embassy would have responded to an official request by a government agency. In addition, he has prohibited Professor Samuel Ratnajeevan Herbert Hoole (another member of the EC) to do this request. I suspect that Deshapriya knows exactly that Gota is still a US citizen and because Prof. Hole is a Tamil. Gota would never have been allowed to stand as a candidate for election. Gota's presidency is illegal.
