The United States does a lot more to increase ‘mil- to- mil’ (military to military) cooperation with Sri Lanka, but there are no plans to establish a permanent base here, an embassy spokesman said.
Commenting on reports that the US is planning to set up a permanent military facility in Sri Lanka, the spokesman said there was no such plan. “It is safe to say that there is a no plan to establish a US military base in Sri Lanka. That has never been part of our cooperation here. There are no future plans that look to establish any kind of a permanent US facility here,” he said.
He also confirmed that there was no US aircraft carriers stationed inside the Trincomalee Harbour.“We work closely with Sri Lankan authorities any time we do have a naval vessel visiting here. There is no plan to have a ship of that size visit Sri Lanka in the foreseeable future,” he said.(Kelum Bandara)
