Mahara Prison unrest: Eight inmates dead, 71 injured

A total of eight inmates were reportedly killed and nearly 71 other inmates were hospitalized during unrest taken place at the Mahara Prison yesterday, the Prison Department said.

They said the unrest turned into a riot. The two injured prison officers who were held hostage by inmates were also released, the Prison Department said.

Meanwhile, the police spokesman said in the morning, Prison officials had to use force to control the situation and police and STF teams were brought in. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

    I was in mahara prison for visa violation case, they treat prisoners as animals, i was sleep one week in toilet , i cannot forget that moments of life.
