A five-member committee appointed to look into public complaints regarding the unreasonable increase in electricity tariffs during the curfew period, has reportedly proposed that relief measures be granted to electricity consumers, an official said yesterday.

He told Daily Mirror the report will be taken up for discussion during the Cabinet meeting today.

The Committee chairman, Power and Energy Ministry Additional Secretary Hemantha Samarakoon handed over the report to minister Mahinda Amaraweera, who appointed a five-member committee last week following the concerns raised by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa about the grievances of electricity consumers.

The public complained that their electricity bills had been calculated in an unreasonable manner during the COVID-19 curfew period.

“Several matters pertaining to concessions on electricity tariffs have been included in the report and action will be taken following the recommendations made at the Cabinet meeting,” the official said.

The other members of the committee included three officials representing the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and an official from the Lanka Electricity Co. (Pvt) Ltd. (LECO).

Meanwhile, when contacted a senior ministry official declined to reveal the content of the report until it was submitted to the Cabinet today since the committee was appointed as a result of recommendations made at the previous Cabinet meeting. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

So called self styled VIPs etc govt can send electricity bills and charge them (top to bottom) no need to add burden tariff to citizens.

Yes definitely they have to consider and give concessions as they have calculated the estimate pricing wrongly, they should follow the last bill of Feb n must seek that same payment

Electricity Board, Water Board and Telecom have exploited their consumers during the locked down period. Bills have been calculated erroneously to cover up their losses. Where are the consumer affairs authority? People can't be fooled by appointing committee for this purpose during this election time.

Absolutely ruthless bunch of cabinet ministers, zero relief during Covid-19 by this govt., there is no point to come up with solutions after robbing the people during such difficult period and solutions just before elections. Sad to see such leaders want to get elected and expected to do right for the country

The committee phobia is full swing. For such a simple solution why committees? Buy time for elections. Gota has failed.

    Yohan Wednesday, 08 July 2020 11:27 AM

Buying time till elections.... relief will be given as and fuel price will be reduced just before elections. What has actually come out of committee reports in the past? Absolutely nothing. Just an eyewash and waste of tax payers money
