The transporting of solid waste from Colombo to Aruwakkalu began yesterday, the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry said.
Sociologist Nimal Premathilka of Ministry said that initially the waste of the Colombo Municipal Council area would be dispatched to this depository and load of ten waste carriers were deployed.
“According to the planned process, waste is to be transported to Aruwakkalu by trains but till the work on the railway track is completed, waste will be transported by waste carrier vehicles,” he said.
The laying of track will be completed by March next year.
At the first stage, 600 tons of waste will be deposited daily at the Aruwakkalu dumping ground and this capacity has been planned to increase up to 1,200 tons. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

What a waste of money. Why cant they incinerate the waste like in Singapore and use the ash to fill the sea and make more land for politicians.
