We have frequent drownings very close to the shores, what is happening ? . Unfortunately we only train doctors and engineers; so, Can’t we get Scientists or Mathematicians from America or China to come and study our costal waters ?

The problem is not the coastal waters. The problem is that there are no mandatory swimming lessons in schools, like in developed countries.

While training everybody to be engineers and doctors, it's also important to teach our kids how to swim, and be vigilant on where to swim. Sri Lanka is an island nation with plenty of rain, and lakes, rivers, waterfalls, etc., all over the country, and the people really need to know how to swim.

We need beach bathing restrictions. And we need to invest in lifesaver groups around the island. Pay them top salary and keep them well equipped. On the way, stopped at Hikkaduwa for a plunge in the beach, I was almost pulled under. Even though I am a good swimmer the waves kept slamming and the under current pulling me into the sea. Walked on to the shore, trembling. Convinced the nearest vila to plant red flags around their place.

After taking drinks ,swimming at sea must be banned, that is the only reason behind tragedies

Educate in Schools The Dangers Monday, 15 January 2024 09:14 AM

Looks like education system is not sending the message to the students on the dangers. All out effort should be carried out for an intensive program starting this week and subsequently a few times a month.

No amount of scientific studying will prevent these unfortunate deaths. Our people do not care even about their own safety, let alone those of the others and will not listen to any advice.

Government should install RING LIFE BUOY'S IN ALL MAJOR BATHING AREAS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY!! AT SEA BATHING AREAS, RIVERS, LAGOONS, AND LAKES !!

Condolence to the families. Did these kids know to swim based on the environment they chose? Then for sure, authorities should investigate the under current situations in the surrounding. In the past many learned swimming from parents and relatives. Now there are classes, which unfortunately is not at all cheap in the island. At least parents should get to know about these important strengths that kids should be taught. Make sure they understand and respect different nature of water strengths based on the environment of the respected area. Water after all is part of our survival in many forms. Hence, a wild force reckon with, understand and respect before enjoy this wonderful God's gift.

Heath and safety measure are poor and they all need to have some education lesson on this all over the country

Really sad to hear this. Poor kids. What is urgently needed is common sense, any amount of education or deploying life guards is not going to help. Common sense is a rare commodity in this country. Hope another god man did not induce this drowning.
