T20: Bottled water suspected in illness outbreak

A A A

The World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka has been hit by suspicions that bottled water supplied to players by the International Cricket Council is behind a gastro illness that affected at least three teams at the event.

The ICC declined to comment last night but it's believed the brand of bottled water provided to the teams has been changed in recent days and that an investigation was underway on Monday night.

Australian bowlers Mitchell Starc and Brad Hogg were struck down with flu-like symptoms, gastro and headaches but recovered in time to play the West Indies at Premadasa Stadium on Saturday.

A virus also swept through the New Zealand and South Africa camps. Black Caps paceman Tim Southee was hospitalised and treated for dehydration.

The ICC's official supplier is Pepsi but its brand of water is not sold in Sri Lanka so it is understood an alternative brand was provided for the tournament.

The ICC has also been confronted with questions about the timing of the tournament, which coincides with the monsoon season in Sri Lanka. One game, between the host nation and South Africa on Saturday, was reduced to seven overs a side while the Duckworth-Lewis method decided Australia's group match against the West Indies. surely contract would have been given to a henchayya who supplied dirty water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Vicks Tuesday, 25 September 2012 05:27 AM

    Miracle of Asia....

Public Abilik Tuesday, 25 September 2012 05:28 AM

Yes we did read (and comprehend). it only says, and I quote "The ICC's official supplier is Pepsi but its brand of water is not sold in Sri Lanka so it is understood an alternative brand was provided for the tournament." So what brand was substituted? Obviously consumables are sourced at a hosting country, and not 'imported' from England or Australia.

    ramkuumar Tuesday, 25 September 2012 05:29 AM

Calistus Jayatilleke, have you returned from Saturn to earth. Please take at least 3 months time to become normal in earth specially in sl. Understand the ground situation,, if you don't have knowledge in common.

    Lal Tuesday, 25 September 2012 05:36 AM

Before we come to any conclusions, what we need is an official statement from ICC clearly indicating the brand of bottled water provided to players and the name of the local supplier who is contracted to supply this brand of bottled water to ICC.

Guna ruwan Tuesday, 25 September 2012 05:41 AM

Do you think that the Monsoon rain is a coup by western countries or ICC

    Sanjeeva Tuesday, 25 September 2012 05:48 AM

"...The ICC's official supplier is Pepsi but its brand of water is not sold in Sri Lanka so it is understood an alternative brand was provided for the tournament.... "

Pepsi water in India is called "AQUAFINA".
Not sure which brand or supplier ICC chose for the T20 WC in Sri Lanka.
Still most in Sri Lanka think any publicity is good publicity so ...
That is the way in THE MIRACKLE OF ASIA :)

Trehan Munasinghe Tuesday, 25 September 2012 05:56 AM

Terrible news indeed... But we can't blame SLC for the water problem because ICC only determines that, BUT the timing of the tournament is ridiculous SEP OCT NOV .... We have had so many days of good weather but the teams were not available... they should have given the tournament a better window, maybe early Jan2013

    Lobo Tuesday, 25 September 2012 06:07 AM

nicky, you seem to have lost the plot here. Like you, others too are entitled to their opinion even if they differ from your own. Anyway judging by the reputation of our officials its not unfair to suspect involvement by some influential person issuing sub-standard water for a commission etc.

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 25 September 2012 08:33 AM

I cannot comprehend what Nicky Karunaratne means by the words : " cannot even able to read..." and "aslo Eghlish"

    Pondering Tuesday, 25 September 2012 08:56 AM

Substandard Water, Substandard Crude Oil, Substandard Ethics... One can go on and on.. As for blaming the govt. (without Reasons?? LMAO!!) Do you live in Sri Lanka or on another planet?

nicky karunarathna Tuesday, 25 September 2012 05:15 AM

These guys cannot even able to read and comprehend and aslo digest simple Eghlish news item such as this. They are waiting to put the blame on govt and SLC. Then, they come with their usual accusation the word regularly used "corruption"! This of course shows their mind-set of jealousy, hatred, animosity, ill will and anger without reasons. And the reasons only known to them. This is the typical Sri Lankan society, which want to put down the man who is going in front of them attitude.

    Fusion Tuesday, 25 September 2012 09:35 AM

SLC cannot overrule the ICC. Whatever brand selected had to be approved by the ICC. "Aquafina" is PepsiCo, Inc branded bottled water. If this is not sold here which brand was used? Was it a local or foreign brand?

Ane Kale Tuesday, 25 September 2012 09:48 AM

Exactly... Even the ads by Ministry of tourism in between are rubbish and we had so much of time to prepare. Really bad administration in all sectors. The government is holding only because of the president and because RW is also with the president.

    DieIndians Tuesday, 25 September 2012 09:48 AM

    Indian media lie...

    sam Tuesday, 25 September 2012 10:00 AM

This article clearly saying that the water is provided by ICC. So what the issue with the government or SLC ?

    Smile Tuesday, 25 September 2012 10:22 AM

Not for this tournament.......read the article again!

    pandu Tuesday, 25 September 2012 10:34 AM

Even the water here has gone to the dogs.

    Siva Tuesday, 25 September 2012 11:18 AM

    Just to mention two points.
Any bottled water can be contaminated by unscrupulous persons.
As far as the T20 dates are concerned the ICC takes advice from local cricket boards.

    Dexter Tuesday, 25 September 2012 12:22 PM

Trust Indian's to screw us yet again with water... and then blame SLC

Don Pere Wednesday, 26 September 2012 12:31 AM

It has been a another sixer hit by corrupt politicos who don't care about the country.

Palitha Ranatunge Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:18 AM

Was this bottled water dirctly i8mported from Madras or Mumbai? Everything from India is the order of the day for Indian dominated I.C.C.

True Sri Lankan Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:16 AM

    what a mess....

    nawa Tuesday, 25 September 2012 01:50 AM

corruption is everywhere.......even in drinking water

    Shaminda Tuesday, 25 September 2012 01:53 AM

Cant we EVER do ANYTHING right? These are the sort of events which can help our Country to rebuild our lost image with the International Community. No doubt there must be some jugglery behind the water supply deal. Shame if we can't even do something so simple right. Corruption everywhere. God save mother Lanka!

Public Abilik Tuesday, 25 September 2012 01:59 AM

Is there no Consumer Protection act In Sri Lanka? How come these 'Brands' are never identified. As in the case of the 'Blade in the Chocolate', shouldn't we, the consumers have a right to know which brand of Chocolates, and Which brand of water is in question? Why keep us in the Dark?

    Danushka Tuesday, 25 September 2012 02:05 AM

Everything is a mess! Every Sri Lankan knows Sep-Oct-Nov is Monsoon season. 2011 WC Ticket Fiasco and now World T20 Rain Fiasco.

    Hal Tuesday, 25 September 2012 02:13 AM

What a shame. We can not even bottle a clean water from a spring. What is miracle talk.

    D.P.Liyanage Tuesday, 25 September 2012 02:37 AM

This is the work of sri Lanka Cricket. Even a small schooling child knows this is rainy season. Take past statistic and analyse. Cricket matches played in this season (Sept-Nov) got washed more than 60%. These were the decissions of so called better management of SL cricket.

DMirror Fan Tuesday, 25 September 2012 02:56 AM

Because ICC calendar is filled by 2 months IPL and other leagues. All money!!

    sach Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:04 AM

it says water was provided by ICC.

    sach Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:11 AM

Don’t panic guys; it says the water is provided by ICC. There had been many matches played in SL before but nothing of this sort happened.

    unl Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:11 AM

This event was organized by ICC NOT by SLC. So blame the ICC.

    Ahmad Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:14 AM

Our environment is not clean and full of parasites. Look at our children, keeping them without fever or flu for more than two weeks have become a challenge.

    Medusa Tuesday, 25 September 2012 01:35 AM

    Match fixing by SLC?

    Rosh Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:26 AM

Thats why Thilanga build the Dambulla Stadium, and even these days, still its playable there...

Sapumal Bandara Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:28 AM

The Sri Lanka Cricket Motto should be changed to "Make hay while sun shines".
    Disgustingly disgraceful.

    kaduru Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:31 AM

Why My motherland is so reckless. In Sri-Lanka unfortunately to say a lot of inferior quality products are sold. Specially, Water, Chocolate, Cosmetics, chemicals, fertilizer Etc. Please don't think of the price give us good quality products to consume. It's very bad impression for out side world if we give contaminated water for In international teams. it can happen same thing to the Tourists. So make immediate action against these low Quality products to remove from market.

    Wara Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:50 AM

Bottled water is provided by ICC.

    Fazli Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:54 AM

I thought bottled water is the most safest to drink, and I am proved wrong. Its hightime we knew the brand name so that we too can keep away ! We dont even know the brand of chocolate in the blade case. So silly is it not !

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 25 September 2012 04:25 AM

Why bottled water when there is plenty of rain - and perhaps, it would have been safer to drink rain water!

    Bushel Tuesday, 25 September 2012 04:26 AM

Please read the above news carefully. It is ICC that has provided the water and the match fixture.

    Nodrog Tuesday, 25 September 2012 04:29 AM

Water from the springs in Nawalapitiya?

    Wara Tuesday, 25 September 2012 04:44 AM

Exactly. Most people haven't read the article properly and as usual put the blame on the government.

    Brainy Tuesday, 25 September 2012 05:10 AM

Nodrog good one, unfortunately only the smart will catch it,
might be wasted on half our population though.
