The Government Medical Officers (GMOA) today said that the medical institute set up in Malabe was not authorized by the Medical Council or the University Grants Commission (UGC) and their degrees will not be recognised.

The Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) had also recently, in a public notice, warned that the Russian degree offered by the institute set up in Malabe will not be recognized.

Vice Chairman of the GMOA, Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya addressing the media today claimed that the private medical faculty did not meet the minimum standard laid down by the SLMC and the UGC for private medical colleges.

The students who obtain degrees from the MMI do not qualify to sit the Act 16 examination held for private and foreign MBBS degree holders to get registration from the SLMC,” Dr. Padeniya said.

“We can only warn that the students who pass out at the MMI would not be able to practice in Sri Lanka,” he said.

“Any medical college in any part of the country requires a minimum standard to produce medical doctors who possesses minimum qualification and experience to practice the profession. The Malabe medical institution does not have facilities and resources to prepare medical students even with minimum practical training or experience,” Dr. Padeniya stressed.

I agree with Janz. Our medical Uni standards are at least 10 years behind european standards. Now our doctors can not get jobs even in UK as they prefer african doctors to ours. QA level is not the correct requirement for medical training. In other countries there are interviews to check whether the students are capable of being of service to the people. Here the doctors are crammers and they are only good to treat diseases not humans!! Almost all those who graduated from NCMC in 1980s are now specialists! But the GMOA was against them too.

MC is headed with idiots who never care about the public. While they are in their positions they have never taken any step to improve the medical system. Just think about the government doctors, they do the strikes by keeping the patients as hostages (not all). They are ready to leave the patients till death, if they don’t get their demands. They have forgotten that they have been educated by public funds. It’s simply killing the people for money. What kind of a standard they are having after bean a doctor and letting down the private sector as questioning the standards

Most of the people don’t know the reality; Sri Lanka is having a big shortage in all medical sectors. However the medical council plays a game here. They never let any private institute to make medical personals, even with qualifications. Nursing is one example. I have heard that most of the government nurses are lacking of knowledge with advanced medical systems. I know most of the doctors are also against with Medical Council (MC) in Sri Lanka, because its being criticized by all over the world(India is an example).

according to some readers only people who get good results can be doctors, there are enough and more examples of malpractice in sri lanka by the so called "brainy doctors" graduated from SL universities. The only problem is these brainy doctors and their “brainier know it all” seniors cover them up and the normal public is blissfully unaware that their loved ones died because of the negligence of the "brainy doctor". The difference between foreign medical graduates and the local gradates is the amount of exposure the locals get cause in SL there are plenty of patients in government hospitals who are in need of care. The people who glorify the "brainy doctors" should remember that the most important thing a doctor should have is a kind heart not just 3 A's at local A/L

Unfortunately, there is no other way to gauge the aptitude of a Sri Lankan students besides the AL's, with its very limited choice of subjects. Wonder if we should pursue our own equivalent of SAT, or something of this sort.

When are these guys going to learn that the A'level is not the only indicator that someone is suitable to do Medicine. Sri Lanka ranks very low in the World University Rankings. Even some Bangladeshi Universities rank above us. The GMOA has been a major obstacle to the progression of medical education, in this country. It is a nothing but a curse!

I think Doctors need to protect their status. In case if more students pass out from private universities it may affect the status of doctors and may loos the customers. However that private institute also should have the required standards, Otherwise they may produce Bulshit doctors ultimately we as innocent patients will be victims of their poor knowledge.

Very Good Move. However, I am sure people will initially identify this as a monopoly of GoSL universities.
For me, I need most brainy students to be the doctors. Not just with 3s'. Our system produce enough talented doctors . it's government responsibility to keep them in SL by giving them the proper respect.
