Blame game of Syria

DIPLOMACY CERTAINLY has taken a backseat on Syria. The ongoing session of the United Nations General Assembly, which was supposed to come up with a practical solution to the crisis, seems to have gone astray.

Permanent members of the Security Council as well as the stakeholders are busy hurling accusations at each other, thus furthering its volatility. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem was equally disappointing, as he used his address to the General Assembly for playing to the gallery. Damascus could have done well by seriously bringing to fore the discord before the world body and detailing plans as to how it plans to tackle with the upheavals in the strife-torn country. Rather Muallem made it a point to castigate the West and many of the Arab states for their alleged ‘blatant-involvement’ in the affairs of his country, and categorically ruled out the option of President Bashar Al Assad stepping down. He also alleged that regional states are responsible for funnelling in arms and ammunition, and plotting to dismember the country. This stunt neither offers any solution nor would pave the way for an amicable solution.

The Syria impasse is quite toiling. With no solution in sight, violence is on the rise. Reports of gun battles in Aleppo, Homs and Damascus have literally left the country in a state of mess, and it is difficult to ascertain as to who is holding the fort. A host of militias, both pro and anti-government, are ruling the roost and the writ of the state is almost non-existent. Muallem who wanted the Security Council to condemn rebel bombings against government installations should have been fair enough to admit that there is a problem, and elicited support to address the issue in totality. His offer to reform the governance apparatus is too little too late, as at least the opposition political forces seem to be uninterested in it. So what the regime in Damascus should ponder is as to how to chalk out a dignified exit. It is quite disturbing at the same time that UN envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi is keeping mum, and not speaking his heart before the world body. The UN this time around cannot afford to keep itself aloof from such an immense issue of peace and security. It is mandatory on it to be part of the solution.
