The drainage system built under the section of Katunayake-Colombo Expressway at Hunupitiya, Wattala had been left without being maintained for years.
“Garbage is seen stagnating in drains emitting a pungent stench and garbage was also seen mounting up under the highway without being cleared,” residents said.
Meanwhile, they complained that the flyover-bridge built near the Hunupitiya Railway Station for the convenience of the vehicular movement was too narrow.
“Though it is a useful facility for the people, drivers have to wait at each end till incoming traffic is cleared. Since two vehicles from opposing directions cannot use the over-bridge at the same time, one individual has volunteered to take up the task of controlling the traffic using a whistle,” a motorist said.
Residents requested authorities to widen the flyover-bridge so that two vehicles could pass without any difficulties.
