Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, who was in remand custody over an accident in 2016, was granted bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today.

He was released on a cash bail of Rs.25,000 and five sureties of Rs. 500,000 each. The court further ordered the former minister to appear before the CCD every Sunday.

Mr. Ranawake was arrested last Wednesday by the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) on the instructions of the Attorney General (AG) over his alleged involvement in a road accident at Welikada in 2016 and was subsequently remanded.

The vehicle belonging to Mr. Ranawake collided with a motorcycle, severely injuring the rider who was identified as Sandeepa Sampath from Godagama. (Yoshitha Perera)

Grate news. All political parties have to concern interest of people of this country. Also they ensure rule of law.

it has to be reported otherway round bike got hit to the wehicle back side and bike driver should resposible for the accident

    Manjula Tuesday, 24 December 2019 11:24 AM

Nihal, he was not taken into custody for being responcible for the accident. He was taken into custody for fleding the accident area and thereafter misleading the incident by naming a false person as the driver at the time of the accident.

Kapila Senaratne Tuesday, 24 December 2019 11:45 AM

Theoretically biker is at fault but the Patalee fled the scene without helping the victim. By law anywhere any the world you become guilty of the crime

No punishment for personnel who drove 1000cc bike which was banned on Sri Lankan roads.

Udaya Gammanpila made Champika a super star by getting him remanded. Champika's popularity sky rocked during the past week. Champika should write a thank you note to Gammanpila.

The case should be thoroughly investigated as the details given by Champaka regarding the accident seems to be not quite right according to way the vehicle been hit . It is definitely not a hit from behind as Champika reported . Motor cycle had clearly hit the back quarter on the left hand side of the vehicle ,indicating a wrong turn done by Champika to the right from the main road . !!!

Andrew Silva Tuesday, 24 December 2019 11:39 AM

If a vehicle is hit behind by another vehicle it is the fault of the person who is travelling behind that vehicle because that driver should travel a safe distance behind. That is the rule in every country may be not in Sri Lanka specially if that driver has some connection to a powerful politician the same way the laws of the country travels behind him.

Mahinda will hang Gammanpila for making champika a hero by filing this case. No ministry for gammanpila at next reshuffle as well.

Gota's great blunder. United the divided opposition by sending champika to jail, ensured that he become the next leader of the UNP. All thanks to wimal and gammanpila

@ nihal rohana, Kapila Senaratne, Andrew Silva and others who make similar comments without knowing the facts. The issue here was driving a vehicle on to the main road from a by road carelessly. If the vehicle (motorbike in this case) driven on the main road could not be stopped to prevent the accident, it will knock on the other vehicle from a side and it could be the front, middle or rear. That was what has exactly happened here. Who will run away from the scene if he was knocked from behind by the other person's fault? Besides this careless driving offence, running away, producing someone else as driver, erasing evidence etc have come into the case.
