UPDATED: Black tigress found in Sri Lanka

The carcass of a black tigress was found today in Deniyaya after it got caught to a poacher’s snare, the Wild Life department said.

Its length from head to tail is three feet 7.5 inches. Height two feet. The tail alone had measured up to 2 feet 4 inches.

"From a distance, its colour is jet black and when inspected from a closer distance, spots are vaguely visible," Wadawalawa “Athathun Sevana” Vet Dr. Kumudini said. According to her, the tigress had not fully grown yet however because of the rarity of the species the exact age cannot be determined.

She also said that the black tigress showed signs that are common to the Panthara Pardus Kotiya species. According to Dr. Kumudini there had been a similar discovery of a black tiger from the Kalavana area some years ago, yet the carcass had been too decomposed to gain proper identification. There had been a few sightings of black tigers from Horton Plains and Sripada areas, she explained.

She claimed that further investigations are necessary to determine whether the creature is a subspecies or a non-agouti mutation of the Panthara Pardus Kotiya species.

Are you sure it has been identified as a Tiger ? Please contact the Wild Life Experts, Mammalogists and Wildlife Ecologists at Perdeniya University and Colombo University to confirm the species. DNA sampling will be very useful. It is very important to have tissue samples and dried blood samples for scientific investigstions. This should be given to the National History Museum in Colombo and a good Taxidermist to fix the animal. It looks more or less a melanistic variation of the Leopard in Sri Lanka. Dear DM & Francis Pereira, kindly make arrangements to putup pics on this rare incident... I'belive in Sri Lanka we find leopards NOT tigers.... leopards - if i remember right - have been sighted in this color variant in some parts... WOW as one has suggested better to keep its DNA preserved for later scientific research...

There are no any Tigers is Sri Lanka. Only have Leopards.. Last tiger recorded in SL in 1940's. (Panthera Tigris)

francis, more news on the size confirm this status.have seen black panthers and the description fits where spots are visible on a closer look.its a wonderful discovery. hope the already dwindling wet zone leopard population can be protected by a proper and a well planned education system among the remote villages bordering the exsisting wet-zone forests.

Their are no Tigers in SL, well at least the 4 legged kind. So this has to be a Leopard. Heard of one roaming around Sinharaja. Please post more details of how it died

The fact that spots could be seen from close quarters confirms that it is a black panther, a variant of leopard- not a TIGER. Tigers have stripes and to my knowledge there are no black tigers (except the human kind!)

Please tell me who identified the animal as a tiger? As far as I know there are no black(melanistic) tigers even in India. This is probably a black panther, a melanistic variation of the Sri Lankan leopard(Panthera pardus kotiya)which is not that rare. Please confirm through a zoological eveluation

"From a distance, its colour is jet black and when inspected from a closer distance, spots are vaguely visible," Wadawalawa “Athathun Sevana” Vet Dr. Kumudini said. A Tiger only 3 foot long with spots and not stripes!! Have you not heard of leopards? Black panthers are just another melanic form of the common leopard. Obviously neither the Vet nor you reporter is aware of this widely known fact.

Possibly this has been an elusive and secret cat who has been living in deep remote forest all these years. Very sad that it was caught in a snare. A good field survey should be done in this region by wildlife personnel and zoological researchers from the universities to see if there may be any others. At the same time a survey of other animals and birds can be done. My suggestion is for appointing Professor Sarath Kotagama from Colombo University to organise a Field Ecological Project and it will be good for the graduate zoology students interested in wildlife ecology and animal behaviour. Any chance of escaping from Puthukudiyiruppu ....from the tiger habitat?

Normally we find only the head of the Black tigresses.

Looks more Like a Black panther to me, The Tiger has a Bigger Face

Are you sure it's not a cross breed with the LTTE tigers. Anyway Better dead than alive

Its so refreshing to see that us Lankans still have not lost our sense of humor. On a more serious note - I believe that is is def'tly NOT from the tiger family but rather an off-shoot of the leopard family. Very interesting. Looking forward to seeing/reading more on this.

Very true Francis, Yep it would be very interesting to check on the species, It would be good if we could have more photographs as well as know more.

Actually this is not a tiger as reported it's a melantistic form of the leopard. It is not a separate species as is indicated but colour abbaration of the normal leopard we find in Sri lanka. Unfortunately the one reported was killed in a poachers snare

Very Familiar eyes. Ah Ha ! looks identical to the 02 legged tiger leaders.

This is rare. Pls ask Wild Life officials to describe the specie(size as well) and the locality it was found. I do not know of any forests in Kahawatta. This could be a cross breed of a fishing cat or rusty spotted if the size is appropriate. Please give us more details

There are no evidence of the existence of non-striped black tigers, neither in Sri Lanka nor in the whole world. The only non-physical evidence, a lost paint by an artist called James Forbes(17xx), which is said to be a portray of a Black Tiger found in India, must be of a black panther, jaguar or that of a leopard, so must our case also explicitly be.

 Posted By: Suren Sarathkumara
SN, according to initial reports the specimen is supposed to be 2ft+ in hight and over 6ft long. So def'tly not a fishing cat or a rusty spotted.
