Over 750 inmates of the Angoda and Mulleriyawa mental institutions are to be given voting rights from next year, Director of National Institute of Mental Health Dr. Jayan Mendis told Daily Mirror online.

Dr. Jayan Mendis also said that a decision has been taken to arrange National Identity cards for these inmates within a month. Accordingly the Ministry of Social Services and the Department of Registration of Persons will work with the hospital staff to achieve the task.

The address of the hospital community house and the address declared at the time of admitting the patient will be used in perfecting the requirement of vital information on the applicant. (Daily Mirror online)

Adding 750 to the existing mentally ill 6,015,934 doesn't make that much of a difference does it?

    Monday, 29 March 2010 12:34 PM

.Politicians should be allowed to campaign inside the Angoda Hospital

    Monday, 29 March 2010 12:37 PM

its a good decision. they will understand our politicians mentality.

    Monday, 29 March 2010 12:43 PM

Great!!!!!!! why not . All who voted for government nedd there heads examined any way!!!!!!

    Monday, 29 March 2010 12:49 PM

I am 100% sure they will atleast make sure that they elect mentally sound people to represent our country!

    Monday, 29 March 2010 12:55 PM

Good decision, They will give their votes to their friends who are 100 % same to those people.

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:00 PM

Very good move as sane people reject the results of elections .

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:05 PM

Is it being allowed because the govt can expect to get their votes?

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:07 PM

Its a very rational decesion. Whole country excersise voting rights and the way they vote and behave indicates that most of them are just out from those two institutions. So why no. Pl do that.If can act fast even for April 8th election........

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:20 PM

Surely , they will select the most suitable ones to the Diyawanna house.

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:21 PM

Their are more mental patients in the Parliment......why dont mental institutions consider about them....

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:22 PM

Maybe be they should just rename the SL parliament "the asylum" Its more appropriate since the prevalence of mental retardation is significantly higher there than in Angoda!

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:23 PM

This clearly shows the mental state of the authorities where they can rig some votes. Why cant these authorities show same interest in providing voting facilities to the migrant workers and other expatriates living abroad who provide the breathing air to this country.

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:35 PM

Now they plan to rob the votes of those innocent mental patients ?

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:37 PM

Decision of the century. How about the inmates of the prisions all around the island. They also have the right to vote for their friends and relatives.

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:39 PM

Very good decision!. After all if people having mental problems bigger than the Angoda patients can rule the country it is fare the patients to get voting rights.

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:53 PM

Are there are any from the Parliament included?

    Monday, 29 March 2010 01:57 PM

When mentally ill can contest so why not vote ?

    Monday, 29 March 2010 02:07 PM

well said J.D. Some of them ran for presidency too....

    Monday, 29 March 2010 02:51 PM

Clearly another 750 added to Rajapakse vote bank

    Monday, 29 March 2010 05:16 PM

Probably, they might take a better decision, than the rest.

    Monday, 29 March 2010 05:22 PM

It seems that it is everyone else who is 'mentally ill' to brutally crack jokes regarding these insecure human beings!

    Monday, 29 March 2010 06:37 PM

    'Pissan' voting for 'pisso'!

    Monday, 29 March 2010 10:04 PM

Why not allow the Angoda inmates to contest the election as well?
