The topic is unlawful structures, not cost of living. Unlawful structures are a danger to the occupants, hinderence to environment. Good planning of town and environment is an essential part of development. I congratulate the government for taking this unpopular but brave position to improve the environment, and quality of life of the population. Demolish and provide safe housing, particularly to the poor.

People are living peacefully in Malligawatta. Why bother? Don't the gov. have anything else to do? Like bring down the cost of living? behaving their members? reducing their trips to foreign countries? buying new cars.... Come on man... What Sri Lankan people need is an egg for Rs 5.00 breakfast for Rs 50, Milk for cheap!People are already suffering and don't make them suffer MORE!

Well there sould be law and order in a country. It it should be honoured by the people. This situaton is a different one due to the fact that these people appear to have been living there for some time. What were the planning department of the council doing all this time. They should have intevined at very early stage when people were excavating to lay foundations. Brian Ranasinghe, London, 01/03/2012

yes, its a very good idea to have ghettos all over the country so that kudu business and all sorts of rackets can thrive and prosper.
Dee Thursday, 01 March 2012 09:18 AM
You think these people are poor? ha! you really need to move around town. Some of the most richest and influential live in such houses(palaces) which does not exist on records and only accesible on foot. They can buy 10 large , normal houses but they wont
Shane Thursday, 01 March 2012 06:38 AM
every problem is for poor people. why cant you guys improve the living standards of the people first and then considering about these developments??? First move them to a proper shelter and after that why cant you guys go ahead with demolishing the unauthroized sturctures. are we hearing any good news these days? very bad.

The Local authorities should be responsible for these unauthorized structures in the whole country .Where ever they may be when they come up immediately they should be stopped. What they do is get some thing to the hand and allow these people to put up any thing any where. Nothing to do with rich or poor the law should be applied immateriality with the help of the Police. Look at Galle face green ,so many legal mushroom outlets which messes up the beauty of the green.
John Thursday, 01 March 2012 08:36 AM
Yes, but there needs to be a due process of visible consultation and public notification prior to actual demolition?
ROSHAIA Thursday, 01 March 2012 07:40 AM
give them proper shelter after demolishe, thise poor citizen who are constructed.
waas Thursday, 01 March 2012 07:31 AM
Its easy to demolish but what about the lives of the people who live there?? where will they go?? they have being living there for so long, paid taxes and water and light bills, what about their children who school in that area.. its easy for us to judge because its not our own houses that are being bulldozerd!!
Andy Thursday, 01 March 2012 07:38 AM
yeah for other than this matter the common rules are applied for the rest of the things. joking ah..
Dee Thursday, 01 March 2012 07:12 AM
Hope the police will do their job. Unauthorized contructions galore in colombo, big and small they all need to be flattened.
