In the backdrop of protests against President Mahinda Rajapaksa's visit to Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today said it was expected from Sri Lanka to treat Tamils with equality and Colombo should highlight steps taken by it in this direction to clear doubts in the minds of people of both the nations.

Stressing on strong and cordial relations between India and Sri Lanka, Chouhan said that "it was expected from the island nation to treat Tamils with equality and the President should highlight the work being undertaken by his government in this regard" during a brief interaction with Rajapaksa in the State Hangar, official sources said.

"This will help in clearing all doubts on the minds of the people of the two nations," Chouhan said.

Rajapaksa arrived in Madhya Pradesh to lay the foundation stone for the Sanchi University of Buddhist and Indic studies amid protest by MDMK with its leader Vaiko along with his supporters being arrested as they tried to move from Gadchicholi to Sanchi to protest the Sri Lankan President's visit.

The Sri Lankan President also agreed to launch a flight between Bhopal and Colombo thrice a week.

The Chief Minister also told the visiting President that the state administration is willing to help Sri Lanka if they decide to constructs a temple where according to mythological stories Goddess Sitaji had given 'Agni Pariksha'.

In case a temple is constructed at that place then this place will also be included in the Mukhya Mantri Teerth Darshan scheme for the senior citizens of the state.

The Sri Lankan President also gave approval for setting up a study centre at the Sanchi Buddhist University campus in Sanchi. (Outlook India)

Better to care about the equality in Indian society than SL.

They already have, their political system with different states enjoying equal autonomy and different cultures recognised by constitution also despite many cultures and people, India has not separated, they are smart in that way..

I thought only TN had dumb chief ministers. This Chouhan fellow should come to Sri Lanka with some low castes from his own state and let them decide if India treats people better than Sri Lanka. No Indian can tell Sri Lanka how to treat people with respect. Sri lanka ranks a lot higher than India with human development index(HDI).

Don't Indian politicians have anything else to do than interfere in SL politics? Even now TN fishermen are depriving tamils in Jaffna of their livelihood by poaching in our water?.

Mind your own business Chauhan and look after the tamils in India. The biggest slum area and most densely populated p/sq mile living in squalid conditions is in India, sort that out first.

Chauhan hosted Rajapakshe yesterday to inaugrate the buddhist university. Finally the host found who he was hosting!! He has nothing to do with tamil nadu.. the state he rules has nothing to compare with TN.. Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Maharastra are the biggest contributor to indian GDP. Enlighten yourself by checking the facts in wikipedia or other souces.

You cant compare India and Sri Lanka. India was a collection of small kingdoms with many different races. The British colonizers governed those kingdoms as a single unit.
Do you know how many separatist groups active in India today ? If so called equality exist in India why they are fighting ?

I don't give a damn about India or their GDP or states etc. My comment is for all Indian ministers to look after their own people first without crying crocodile tears for tamils here just to buy some cheap popularity. Every two-bit politician wants to champion the cause of tamils here, only for this reason.

The situation in Lanka, unlike India is not of its own making. Tamils were brought into Lanka. Thus it is not right for the Tamil community, who are infact Indians to demand such equal rights. Remember the simply fact that, till Arunachalam, created the Ceylon Tamil concept in the Census in early 20th Century. All Tamils were classified as Indians! Its extrodinary, that Lankans are this ignorant!
