A seven year old child was killed during a shootout between police and armed robbers in Beruwala this afternoon. The shooting occurred near the Beruwala Food City, the police said.

The child was in a three wheeler with his father when he was accidentally shot. The father was also injured in the shootout. The robbers managed to flee the scene.

When contacted by Daily Mirror online, the Kalutara Hospital said that the child died on admission to the hospital. Four police officers were arrested over the incident.

Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody, speaking to Daily Mirror online, said that a special police team had been deployed from Colombo to Beruwala to probe the shooting incident and those responsible will be arrested. (Daily Mirror online)

Mr. Suren, as long as folks like you living in this country, never will the nation transform, being ignorant sucks!!

    Elizabeth Thursday, 16 September 2010 07:12 AM

Yes I second it, this cop should be interdicted

    Thilini Thursday, 16 September 2010 05:54 AM

The Police should be more responsible in safeguarding civilians. What a sad story!

    Mushi Thursday, 16 September 2010 05:28 AM

Public in Beruwala should be vigilant now as Police is not reliable for their safety. They act irresponsibly but i know police is very good in taking bribe specially in Beruwala.

    Pathma Thursday, 16 September 2010 05:28 AM

I now remember the innocent civilians (including children) who shot dead in the cross fires between the terrorists & the forces for years.

    Deni Thursday, 16 September 2010 05:03 AM

    Sri lankan police... Like always...

    robinson Thursday, 16 September 2010 04:28 AM

While commending the Sri Lanka Police for their dedicated service to the nation, how the police has acted in this situation is not acceptable how ever much the police officers were at risk, I think in public areas they need to be more careful. can the police give the life back to the cute child. Don't policemen have children. This is ridiculous act by the police.

    Holman Thursday, 16 September 2010 04:07 AM

    Aiyo Siri Lanka police.

mata nikang hithunan Wednesday, 15 September 2010 09:22 PM

Our cops are smart only on speed-guns!

    bernard Wednesday, 15 September 2010 04:38 PM

Maybe this is the first time they used their rifles. When you look at some cops I wonder how can they even lift a rifle, let alone shoot it accurately. I feel sorry for that innocent child and the grieving parents.

Enthy Lingam Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:28 PM

It will not bring the child back to life nor will not gurantee that this will not happen again in Sri Lanka

    Rishan Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:06 PM

These police officers should have acted responsibly. It is the duty and common sense to protect innocent civilians first.

    Rishan Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:05 PM

What has happened to the armed robbers?. have they safely escaped at the expense of the life of an innocent child. Need to take action against the top cop who ordered to shoot in a public area.

    Geronimo Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:04 PM

...but then on the other hand if this going to be a police state. Well?

    Yehiya-Doha Wednesday, 15 September 2010 01:42 PM

Dear Suren soysa , Sharia law will reduse the crime.Punishment according to the witness .

    Yehiya-Doha Wednesday, 15 September 2010 01:23 PM

Police always kill the innocent. They can kill who is in custody,

Suren Soysa Wednesday, 15 September 2010 01:02 PM

Tm Abay Wednesday, 15 September 2010 12:02 PM

stupid cops only know to take bribe very professionally, cannot handle their own weapon

Smart Aleck Wednesday, 15 September 2010 11:34 AM

Cops and Robbers! Bang! Bang! The poor innocent kid had to pay the price for the fun and games.

    mnsmart Wednesday, 15 September 2010 11:27 AM

many constables carry T 56 weapons while on duty and how safe are they. Unlike armed forces who has been given comprehensive training on weapon usage, I doubt about the cops. when you compare the way forces and the cops carry arms, it's visible.

Top Sri Lankan Wednesday, 15 September 2010 11:14 AM

Honestly I thought was reading an american news.
