President Mahinda Rajapaksa, addressing the nation at the Independence Day celebrations in Kandy a short while ago gave an assurance that he will use his fresh mandate to regain what the island has lost during the war.

While noting that this is the first celebration since the defeat of terrorism, President Rajapaksa also said that he will rebuild the country especially the areas which were devastated during the 30 year conflict.

Later speaking in Tamil, the President said that now the people can live in peace and in safety and go anywhere they wish with no fear or restrictions. He also said that the country should solve its own problems through dialogue. He also urged the Tamil people not to forget their motherland and said the people should not be misled for petty political gain.

President Rajapaksa added that he had not taken any decision which would betray the country and that all his decisions were in the best interest of the nation.

Today is Cancer day universally! We have a incurable cancer in our democracy. It is bribery and corruption!
It is eating our democracy; it is ruining the lives of young people who are taking up to the same way of life to gain their goals. We have also lost our freedom in many ways. There are secretive ways of manipulating the secret ballot!
All of these things have matured to the fullest during the last few years!
Its time we look at our cancer. The cancer that is killing the spiritual life of even those who abide by certain religious faiths!
What a great nation we are now; we are ready to say JAYAWEWA for money! and fame! and positions!

what for? for conducting corrupt governance, disregarding the constitution, letting the rule of law go to the dogs, stealing from the public purse etc, etc.

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 09:24 AM

Sometimes MR used to jabber without reason and he does not know what he is talking about. Poor man,.... what to do?

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 09:26 AM

His talks are senseless at-times. Being the President, he should talk wisely rather than getting exiited.

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 09:27 AM

Exactly correct Maheson, not only lack of independence, lack of knowledge too counts.

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 09:28 AM

Well done for what ? Misusing the election and coming to power again. This is the reality and how could you say well done.

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 04:13 AM

    Jayawewa!

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 09:32 AM

independence comes round the corner every 4th of feb. for us it is only a word with a meaning which doesn't mean anything practically. as a democracy we expect more but what we get is rhetorics for a brighter future and past glories that is forgetten in two days including by the so called leaders themselves.
the present leadership have been by far the most dangerous, worst and corrupt in upholding the values of democracy, freedom and independence of the people either as free citizens or in our work places.

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 09:33 AM

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 04:45 AM

I think most of us haven't realised what we have lost, and that's what we can conclude by judging the recent election results.

Freedom is what we need to regain.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 05:40 AM

Yes for sure democracy, free media ,treat to life and we lost all our rights even right of voting .

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 11:36 AM

Take simply from what "REALITY" says. The rest will automatically fall into place. Now there will be more corruption in the state sector because everbody is somebody's somebody amd the common man is NOBODY.
Can see that already in Colombo, more of those illegal DOCTORED plated vehicles are on the road.

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 05:54 AM

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 05:58 AM

Dear President, lack of independent journalism is a great betrayal for the democracy.

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 06:04 AM

He said he will defeat LTTE 4 years ago...

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 06:20 AM

If president sincerely want to win over the Tamil people in the North and East he need to serious consider changing his partners in NE . I don’t think the average Tamil in north east is against President Rajapaksa , but they were against his partners.... Douglas Devananda in the north, Minister Karuna and chief Minister Piilyan . They all have one thing in common they have more Tamil blood in their hands than any other politicians in SL..... that’s why President Rajapaksa lost in NE.

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 06:23 AM

Respect and maintain the democrazy and stop curruption. That's all we expect from u.. Tks.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 07:11 AM

MR that liner was meant for you.

    Thursday, 04 February 2010 01:18 PM

Can we ever regain what we lost in Democracy, Freedom of thought and freedom of expression including media freedom and above all the country's good standing among the world community.
