UNP MP Karu Jayasuriya on Monday said that the military mentality is breeding in the country and the trappings of a dictatorship were quite evident.

“Although there was peace in the country military expenditure had increased. There are reports regarding the appointment of government agents as brigadiers, in addition to the appointment of school principals as colonels. There are reports that the designation of the Inspector General of Police is to be changed to Commissioner General of Police. This foreshadows a military government,” he said.

Addressing a press conference he said that the intimidatory acts of the government were increasing and the trappings of a dictatorship were quite evident.
The Opposition should unitedly stand up against any threat to the judiciary, Jayasuriya said.

He told journalists that the Opposition should safeguard the judiciary and thereby safeguard democracy.

“The government’s behavior in this situation is incredible,” said Mr. Jayasuriya referring to a report that the Chief Justice was to be impeached.

He said that, according to the article 107 of the Constitution, an impeachment motion could be brought against the Chief Justice only if malpractices had taken place in the judiciary or if the Chief Justice was suffering from any infirmity that kept him or her from performing the duties of the said post.

He said it was unfair to inflict pressure on the Chief Justice for acting according to her conscience.

“The pressure applied on the Chief Justice, by making various allegations against her husband, cannot be condoned,” he said.

The main problem in Sri Lanka, there is no powerful opposition party to make strong & reasonable voice.Even present government is heading for a military rule,it will make some diciplene among the society to controll rapes, crimes, fraud or any other corruptions.

    subbiah Tuesday, 30 October 2012 09:33 AM

Mr.karu do not forget your party politicized crime when it was in
    in power.

    AJI Tuesday, 30 October 2012 09:33 AM

Then why did you guys try to bring a retired army guy as the president? Those days people always talked about descipline.

This is a very good situation, Military mentalaity. Military systems work any where and every where, need to have a structured system in every corner.

Janaki Kalansuriya Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:30 AM

Never mind that. Tell us with what mentality you double crossed party alliances first!!

buffaloa citizen Tuesday, 30 October 2012 03:49 AM

You were the boosting mechanism to this regime. You quit the regime simply because you were getting marginalised and not getting enough butter on your bread, like the others.

    Naman Tuesday, 30 October 2012 11:30 AM

Only the corrupted survive in Sri Lanka under the current Government. Spending huge sums on Defence ( of the King and all his siblings and those who are remotely connected to them)

    Naman Tuesday, 30 October 2012 11:44 AM

Don't you think you already have true democracy!

AL Rasa Tuesday, 30 October 2012 04:14 AM

Karu does it means that you are suggesting military free society. HODATA HITI You still seems to be supportive of LTTE?

    Buddadasa Tuesday, 30 October 2012 04:32 AM

in a way it is good, then there will be discipline

    Chan Tuesday, 30 October 2012 06:46 AM

Go round the country. Walk on Streets in Colombo. A benevolent dictatorship is delivering goods. Good governance and democracy are nice words but they are not practical. Even in America indirectly the military calls the shots.

Abhiman Purawesiya Tuesday, 30 October 2012 06:48 AM

Looks like it is the trend now, Mr. Karu? Even UNP leader also says the party's affairs to be handled like a army regime?

    lionheart Tuesday, 30 October 2012 06:54 AM

You crossed over when this regime could have been defeated. Now you are talking bull......Until SF, RW, Sajith, Dayasiri, JVP bury thier differences and stand together, nothing will happen. When they do someday come together, then there is a chance. Else, we will just go and sleep.

    Surain Tuesday, 30 October 2012 07:08 AM

I suggest that as we all have eyes and ears to look in to what he says carefully rather than Criticising the past mistakes. country is heading for a much worst situation from all fronts we are are going down as a nation.

DOT UNCLE Tuesday, 30 October 2012 07:21 AM

Chief Justice should deliver the judgment according the book and not according to her conscience................ !!!

    MaPer Tuesday, 30 October 2012 07:24 AM

Military training was given to all principals/teachers with Colonel statusa being bestowed on principals - but yet THE PRINCIPALS OF ROYAL AND THURSTAN COLLEGES COULD NOT PREVENT THE RECENT MAYHEM!!! Just goes to show how effective this type of training is.

Trehan Munasinghe Tuesday, 30 October 2012 07:26 AM

What other type of Government should be in place to control the uncivilised people of Sri Lanka...???
The only problem is we no longer have a strong opposition , So I blame YOU and the UNP for not doing enough, it is your responsibility to keep the present Govt in check, but at the moment they (Govt) have no care for any opposition. So go back to sleep, and stop making statements with no actions.
Its time for a new generation of genuine leaders !!!

Real Peace Tuesday, 30 October 2012 08:19 AM

...and the players you led are now building a fortress for the regime...

    bandara Tuesday, 30 October 2012 08:44 AM

yeah blame the opposition and continue to vote for the present regime

    Rahim Tuesday, 30 October 2012 09:00 AM

Sri Lankan "lions" (lol) deserve dictatorship. If you allow true democracy to flourish in this country we will be led by people like Idi Amin.
