Lankan arrested with Rs.10.1mn gold

A Sri Lankan youth who arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) from Singapore was arrested last night with more than Rs.10.1million worth gold, airport customs said.
 
The suspect was identified as a 21 year old youth from Dematagoda.

Custom officials recovered nearly 1.74 Kilograms of gold which contains 216 gold chains, 20 necklaces, six pairs of earrings and 13 gold biscuits inside the suspect’s knee guards.

Customs confiscated the gold and imposed a fine of Rs.700, 000 on the suspect. (Deepa Adikari)

    The youth probably is only a carrier. They have to find out the local agent to whom this has been brought. Just confiscating and fining is not enough

    In all other countries people who bring in commercial quantities of merchandise are told to pay the relevant import duties and take away the goods.
    I don't know why they have to make such a hue and cry each time someone brings a kg of gold or a bag of sarongs, and portray the customs officers, all over the media as heroes who saved our country from a demon.
