Democratic National Alliance Leader Sarath Fonseka said today that the recent flash floods in Colombo and Gampaha was due to the incorrectly-built jogging tracks and parks.

“The jogging tracks and parks built by the authorities are not up to proper standards and were built without knowledge on the requirements of such infrastructure. The Katunayake-Colombo Expressway was also a reason for flash floods in Gampaha as it is not built up to accepted standards,” he said.

Mr. Fonseka said the DNA would join with Trade Unions and other parties in the protest march on May 15 against the electricity tariffs hike and requested everyone to join it.

When asked about party’s opinion on Queen Elizabeth II abstaining from visiting to Sri Lanka for the CHOGM, he said, the reason for not attending might be that the UK was not approving the system of governance in this country. (Sanath Desmond and Lahiru Pothmulla)

    Ranabahu Friday, 10 May 2013 04:15 AM

Aiyo sir, we thought you have improved. Jogging tracks and parks are now very popular among the city dwellers. Irrespective of our political alignments, we all should appreciate what the authorities has done when it comes to jogging tracks and cleanliness of cities.

    nalaka Friday, 10 May 2013 04:21 AM

but sir their were flods in sri lanka even before these were build

    wernie Friday, 10 May 2013 07:33 AM

Jogging tracks may help to the middle and upper class more than normal people ,who struggle to earn a buck for the day..Its not the point ,accept the fact that proper survey and planning should have done before,as we have enough knowledgeable people in the relevant fields. We should appreciate the concept of beatification of the city.

    nalaka Friday, 10 May 2013 04:25 AM

if we have cleared and dregged the canals well and not clear marshy lands in the outskerts of colombo then flodding can be avoided alot

MayIwin Silva Friday, 10 May 2013 10:30 AM

Pack of Jokers built the parks and joggers track.

rukshan Edirisinghe Friday, 10 May 2013 04:38 AM

as an environmental engineer... I must agree to the extent that when building parks in marshy areas, special care must be always taken.... I was always wondering what standards they were following when reclaiming land for such parks....

    Leslie Saturday, 11 May 2013 07:25 AM

What a dum statement .. go take a hike you...

    John Friday, 10 May 2013 05:02 AM

I fully agree these are all hasty make-dos for instant gratification preceding a major event, with NO environmental considerations/knowledge? Also the dysfunctional Colombo drainage system - true development is also to attend to these deficiencies.

    Dinesh Friday, 10 May 2013 03:21 AM

SF is absolutely correct... The recent flash flood of Ragama station and the town is due to marsh lands being filled for car parks, services station and land grabbing. You can see this as you pass Ragama station towards Colombo.

Nature's drainage systems are being blocked. Sri Lanka is part of a rain forest system in the south east

Miracle Child Friday, 10 May 2013 05:08 AM

    what a statement

Maruwa samaga waase Friday, 10 May 2013 03:26 AM

    Well come another politician .

    Mooven Friday, 10 May 2013 05:09 AM

Any construction carried out according to the whims and fancies of uneducated (in relavant fields) politicians will end up in disater. In recent times we can show many examples.

    Concerned Friday, 10 May 2013 05:09 AM

People are not going to nod to everything you say. Jogging tracks have immensely helped so many health conscious people, specially in Colombo and suburbs. We appreciate such development work done by the UDA around Kotte and suburbs.

    Foxen Friday, 10 May 2013 06:34 AM

We thought you are a WAR HERO Not a Civil Engineer.

    . Amila.G Friday, 10 May 2013 06:35 AM

This time you are wrong sir . Face reality these were long due, may be fifty years .

Janaki Kalansuriya Friday, 10 May 2013 09:26 AM

In the UK no constructions can take place in areas which have not been identified safe for any. I'm certain there are so many other countries using common sense and intelligence following these rules. Our leaders are simply blinded with personal ambitions and no foresight. "Look before you leap" is not an option with them.

    sarath Saturday, 11 May 2013 03:54 AM

dear MayI win Silva, very rarely we get people like you and of same name sake. they never think before they talk or later.we are looking forward to meet more Jokers like of same name.
