Making an official statement of the Government, with regard to the UNHRC resolution  Minister of External Affairs Prof.G.L.Peiris said that said Sri Lanka would not allow any foreign intervention at any time. Speaking in Parliament today, he said Sri Lanka’s stand on the issue was consistent right throughout. The Minister said his views are official views of the government. This was in response to a query raised by the opposition whether his views are accepted by the government.

He also said that collective commitments forced 11 nations to vote in favour of the resolution on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva
though they were against it individually. Professor Peiris who was speaking during the debate on six financial Bills in the House, said some nations within the European Union were included in this list of countries that were personally against the resolution.

He said a representative from a European  country at the sessions in Geneva had personally informed him that his country is individually against the resolution but would be compelled to vote in favour as it is the common stand of the European Union.

The Minister who criticized the UN Human Rights Council said a negative view on it is emerging currently. He said even members of US congress hold the view that the Human Rights Council is politicized. Professor Peiris said countries such as Israel had taken a hard line on UNHRC and had openly stated that it had terminated all engagements with UNHRC and would not allow any official from it to visit that country.

UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera who joined the debate later raised a question to this effect pointing out that there are contradictions in the statements that are made by the Ministers. He was referring to a statement that have been made by Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene that the views aired by Minister Peiris on the Geneva issue are not the official views of the government.(Yohan Perera)

Good decision. As the sturn action taken even, at the time of war we could eradicate the LTTE goons from the country. If we danced to the tune of west , still problem is remained. Be with a backbone.

    Mr.Peiris,
You can only compare Israel's stand if your country has produced powerful people like Irael (Financially and Politically) in the International level. Your comments and your other leaders comments show you and your country will never come out of the " Third world " status.

How could one colonise one's own country?

    kadalaya Friday, 30 March 2012 09:25 AM

This minister has been a total failure. He is not mentioning this name of the european country. Just playing for time. Should Sri Lanka not abide by the UN resolution we are sure to hit by sanctions from individual countries that sponsored the resolution. It is finally the man on the street that will get affected.

TOO LATE AND WASTE OF TIME. TRY TO DO SOMETHING POSITIVELY ATLEAST TO SATISFY THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY ON THE HUMAN RIGHTS ALLEGATION AGAINST YOUR COUNTRY.

    sanjeev Friday, 30 March 2012 09:55 AM

    Good for MR!!

Shelton Fernando Friday, 30 March 2012 09:44 AM

Mr Minister you can make any number of statements whether official or unofficial, and play to the gallery as everybody in your regime including the leader is doing, but the realitity has to be faced by the country if the issues highlighted in the resolution are not properly addressed and the recommendations implemented in an acceptable way. If you flirt with China and continue colonisation of North more problems are on the cards.

Who is this rebel David Thayalan Cohen ? Needs a mouth wash or what ????

    Dorothy Friday, 30 March 2012 10:27 PM

of course what David Thayalan says confirms the so called international attitude towards a third world nation struggling to rise up after 30 years of terrorism . Are you trying to say 'if only'' to this nation , or is it another extension of colonialism civilisong the natives on behaviour in the international arena!Only fiancially powerful nations can carry out their policies .
