The Ayurvedic Department has informed the Mirihana police to crackdown on illegal Ayurvedic massage centers operating under the guise of spas without a valid license, Ayurvedic Commissioner Ramani Gunawardena told Daily Mirror online.

The commissioner said that only 15 Ayurvedic centers are licensed to operate in the country including just five in Colombo but several illegal centers are in operation including nearly 50 which had their applications for a license rejected.

She noted that under the law a certified Ayurvedic doctor should be present at any licensed Ayurvedic massage center or spa and it is also illegal for a male to massage a female or female massage a male.

The commissioner said that a committee has been appointed to look into the operations of spas in the country while a special team has also been deployed and legal action will be taken against anyone violating the regulations.

Dr. Gunawardena meanwhile noted that some illegal spas continue to operate with the backing of influential persons and political figures. (Daily Mirror online)

All this 'banning' is for the police to make some extra money ...

It is too late a move. We do things in Sri Lanka in this way in every field? No strict and clear guidelines are issued from the begining on any thing and everything. such as:-
Private International Schools, NGOs and INGOs, Private Bus Services, Distribution of Free Text books., Polythene usage; Housing allocations, Building construction in the cities., University Education, Private Practice of Doctors,Taxi service, - Everything is open ended to be manipulated according to whims and fancies .

Why should a spa come under ayurwedic certification? Are all the spas in the rest of the word under ayurwedic certification?

    Monday, 24 May 2010 07:30 AM

Absolutely agree with Mr Sena. You have said all and more than what I had in mind to say.

Ayurveda is an unofficial trademark for Sri Lanka tourism. we sell the term Aryuweda all around the Europe, so how its done seriously affects our tourism industry. I wonder why you guys can't understands these simple correlations.

    Just read the news correctly

'Mirihana police to crackdown on illegal Ayurvedic massage centers'

it is only for illegal Ayurvedic massage centers... there are so many of fake ones calling themselves to be Aurvedic just to attract foreigners. They have to be dealt with otherwise it will affect tourism negatively.

We Lankans seem to be associating the words 'spa' and 'massaging' with some antii-social, dubious and mischievous activity that ought to be discouraged and condemned. The truth of the matter is massaging is a very effective form of body theraphy both under indigenous and western medical traditions. When you have conditions like back pains and shoulder pains, massaging affected areas is an effective treatment process inder both systems. There is abosolutely no reason to demand that a simple activity as massaging should be done only under the supervision of a licensed ayurvedic physician. MASSAGING IS NOT THE MONOPOLY OF AURVEDA DEPARTMENT.

These lunatics and their policies taking us to the Stone Age, these idiots confining civilians in all sides while they are having the ultimate freedom, I’m not promoting illegal spas or prostitution but you know all these are the factors of human civilization,

    Monday, 24 May 2010 05:59 AM

Will this really happen in our great land? most of these so called SPA's owned by big shots??

    Monday, 24 May 2010 03:29 AM

Ha ha! It will be interesting to see what this latest crack down will unearth..especially the male-female massage part! These 'crack-down' people must choose their themes out of a hat. What next?!

    Monday, 24 May 2010 05:36 AM

So What is the big deal? Ayurveda is not a trade mark owned by a person or an institution. It is traditional medicine. You can rub cocunut oil or "Thala Thel" oil any oil on your body and call it Ayurvedic treatment. What I see is thsese institutions provide a great service by providing employment and relaxation to people.I dont see anything anti social about it.

Good strategy to reduce the budget deficit!

    Monday, 24 May 2010 05:30 AM

Check the Hit Ad. How many Spa advertisements available mentioning the approval license or not. But report says only 5 approved Spas available in Colombo. Authorities can start the crackdown using these advertisements if they really want to do.

care to enlighen us color blind on what the 'psychological thinking' is behind the "Red Zones"??

    Monday, 24 May 2010 05:05 AM

almost every spa or a massage parlour (whatever you name it) has a person calling himself a doctor. Who knows if he's a cetified doctor? Banning won't stop this. Leagalise this by maintaining a good standered. This really has a psychological relaxation too.

    Monday, 24 May 2010 04:50 AM

Singithi, after work you can go to a gym. Singithi I think you are too small to understand what is happeng in those Spas.

    Monday, 24 May 2010 04:32 AM

our evolution is going back to hundred years, we still in the 18th century. why should you have to bother about male or female? that is their choice and their rights,

    Monday, 24 May 2010 04:27 AM

This will never happen since lot of massage parlours of this type are owned by politicos, The rest owned by underworld leaders and businessmen Sorry to say this, but this is Sri Lanka.

    Monday, 24 May 2010 04:01 AM

After work how can i relax my body

    Monday, 24 May 2010 03:47 AM

"it is also illegal for a male to massage a female or female massage a male" What????

Law of economics is much more powerful than the law of the land... Legislators and regulators need to understand this basic fact. If there is demand, there will always be supply.....Just ensure that it is not a health hazard and conducted very discretely... One has to understand the psychological thinking behind "Red Zones"...
