Eighty Sri Lankans of Chinese origin who have been living in Sri Lanka over a period of time have been given Sri Lankan citizenship so far, the Department of Immigration and Emigration, registering persons of Indian origin said.

The Deputy controller of the department, W.A.D.U.V Nissanka said the citizenship is been given according to a special act approved in 2008 and the time period for issuing the document will expire in 2013.

It is reported that the first Chinese people had arrived in Sri Lanka even before Sri Lanka was declared as an independent country 1948. (Daily Mirror online)

The word "been" in the second paragraph should be "being."

The Chinese Immigrants in this country over the years have been contributing their share to the economy-silently and with no hassle to anyone and deserve citizenship.

And still absolutely nothing on the national problem concerning the Tamils ... what a shame!

    Neomal Thursday, 02 September 2010 03:26 AM

Must be part of the Hambantota harbour deal.

    Deepal Thursday, 02 September 2010 03:28 AM

    - We had a "national problem" with a Tamil terrorist group called the LTTE.

Ananda Herath Thursday, 02 September 2010 04:18 AM

Please don't look at everything negatively.

This is a very positive thing.

These Chinese people have been living in this country for a long time making a good contribution to the country, without making unreasonable demands.

It is so good to see them being given citizenship.

    polkiccha Thursday, 02 September 2010 04:25 AM

so you are thinking we will have a problem with the chinese as well?

banana republic Thursday, 02 September 2010 04:44 AM

These chinese folk should have been granted citizenship years ago not now. These are hardworking people who love this country as much as the so called patriotic sinhala's. They have positively contributed to this country. It is unfortunate that the west is not capable of helping us now as they are bankrupt. However whatever you may think of china ( and I have a big problem with their annexation of Tibet) they have always been a true friend of SL.

Lanke Banda Thursday, 02 September 2010 05:38 AM

Wonderful as the Chinese people are Sincere towards S.L.

    Managala Thursday, 02 September 2010 05:38 AM

We do not have national problem concerning Tamils. we did have National Problem called LTTE its over now we are living equally and peacefully in this country no blood baths no human flesh on the roads.

    TRUTH Thursday, 02 September 2010 06:08 AM

Yes part of the plan to give this country to Chinese and Indians. The cream of the Sri Lankans are already migrated.

    kanniah Thursday, 02 September 2010 10:10 AM

Please don't drag Tamils into this issue. LTTE was a symptom caused by disease of ethnic discrimination. We have temporarily got rid of the symptoms but the root cause for the disease has been not dealt yet.
