Bangladesh registered a classic win against Sri Lanka in a rain-reduced contest, to knock India out of Asia Cup. Beating Sri Lanka by 5 wickets chasing 212 in 40 overs, the hosts earned a title shot for the first time in the history of the competition.

The chase after a long rain delay did not begin on an auspicious note. Nazimuddin (6) was dismissed by Nuwan Kulasekara in the second over and Jahurul Islam (2) and Mushfiqur Rahim (1) followed soon after. It however was the brilliant knock of 59 from Tamim Iqbal that set the tempo as he cemented himself with Shakib-al-Hasan to deny Sri Lanka.

After a healthy partnership of 76 for the 4th wicket, a breakthrough came when Sachithra Senanayake dismissed Iqbal. Al-Hasan was made to follow four overs later.

A stunned stadium was given hope however by Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah. Earlier in the day, Sri Lankan batsmen fell like a pack of cards as despite Chamara Kapugedera's 62, Bangladesh bowlers showed they were determined to keep the target low and ensure a win. The visitors were bundled out for 232 in 49.5 overs.

The previous best finish in the tournament for Bangladesh was third in 1986. This despite participating in nine editions. In the ongoing event, Bangladesh finish with as many points as India but move ahead on the basis of their win against MS Dhoni and his team earlier. (NDTV)

Dave Whatmore has given Bangladesh a solid foundation to build on, just as he gave the Sri Lankan cricketers paving the way for us to win the World Cup.

    Yes, absolutely.

    KonedeLihapuJapana Wednesday, 21 March 2012 12:01 PM

    steven Wednesday, 21 March 2012 07:46 AM

    Dont mix sports with politics.
Win is a win and loss is a loss!

    Riyaz Wednesday, 21 March 2012 05:10 AM

yeah... we minnows thrashed India out of WC in 1996, remember that and it will repeat again and again..! we were in the last 2 world cup finals...! We minnows love the game, love the team, we stick around and cheer until the end of every game, we don't walk off in the middle of the game, we don't burn the seats in the stadium, we don't stone their houses, we don't stone their busses.. burn their Mannequins.., We Love Cricket, and our players play for the love of the game, NOT for money!!

Lanka Atapattulanka Tuesday, 20 March 2012 05:47 PM

This the first time I feel so happy after losing a match !!!!

    Sidath Wednesday, 21 March 2012 05:09 AM

How pathetic most comments above are. It seems that India not going to the finals, is being given more malicious thoughts than SL losing. Clearly shows the nature of our people. Will cut the nose to smite the face!

I see a comment 'seeing the arrogance demonstrated by Kohli...' Why? Because he hit a superb 183 runs? and he is a global brand name?

And by the way, Weldone BD!

    Ronald Tuesday, 20 March 2012 08:39 PM

    Match fixing???????????????????????????

    Shakir Tuesday, 20 March 2012 08:35 PM

me too, this is an answer to the south indian politiccos

    nilan Tuesday, 20 March 2012 07:52 PM

I am glad that atleast Sri Lankan cricketers had the guts to show the Indians of our displeasure in a way , that will hurt them for a long period . Good lesson for our Indian back politicians . Way to go guys and India , wait and see ,we got more to offer with us in the future .

    Bhumi Tuesday, 20 March 2012 07:35 PM

We fixed the match, SL is pissed off with India for supporting US resolution at UNHCR Geneva, so we wanted to send India out of the final

    Kumara Tuesday, 20 March 2012 07:38 PM

Do not spoil the name of sports with politics. Human rights subject has nothing to do with a game. Indirectly your comment shows that Sri Lankans purposely lost the game. Think twice before writing such comments Sanjaya.

    Grumpy Tuesday, 20 March 2012 07:37 PM

Sad to see us losing but I am happy that Bangladesh is through to finals. Seeing the arrogance demonstrated by Kohli and some others, I wished that India should not win the title.

    rajeeb Tuesday, 20 March 2012 07:26 PM

    Bangladesh Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Junideen Tuesday, 20 March 2012 07:49 PM

    sanjaya Tuesday, 20 March 2012 06:51 PM
