The Army today denied claims that a group of soldiers attempted to abduct Kolonnawa Mayor Ravindra Udayashantha at Wellampitiya last night.

Military spokesman Brigadier Nihal Hapuarachchi told Daily Mirror online that a group of soldiers in civvies had travelled in a vehicle via Wellampitiya. At Wellampitiya a group of people in the area had an argument with these soldiers resulting in the Police arresting the soldiers. Later the soldiers were released after proving their identities.

However, Mr. Udayashantha charged that the soldiers attempted to abduct him, but they failed because of the residents in the area.
