A trishaw driver who had made sexual gestures to a woman who was driving a car on March 15, was remanded till April 1, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara told the Daily Mirror today.
He said the trishaw driver was arrested under the Section 345 of the Penal Code which stipulates that whosoever, by assault or use of criminal force, sexually harasses another person, or by the use of words or actions, causes sexual annoyance or harassment to any other person commits the offence of sexual harassment and shall on conviction be punished.
“The suspect had surrendered to the Bambalapitiya Police through a lawyer and was remanded after being produced in the Aluthkade Magistrate‘s Court,” SP Gunasekara said. “The suspect is a resident of Galaha, Deltota.”
The woman driver had posted a video on social media. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
It seems to me the guy was showing the middle finger, how are gestures deemed as criminal force? I see "me-too" extreme feminism coming to sri lanka.
Lady driver Tuesday, 19 March 2019 07:03 PM
As a woman driver of more than a decade it was nothing new years ago. There were far more aggressive behaviours like tapping on the window, driving in front refusing to give way and even tailing and threatening. This sort of behaviour is just not accepted anymore. Real men respect other drivers on the road whether it's a man or womn

@ Janaki: I don't think it has anything to do with him being a Tamil. Sexual harassment happens everywhere and is conducted by men of all ethnicities and nationalities. I have had gestures, comments and worse by Sinhalese, Indian, Tamil, European men. Unfortunately, I was not fast enough to take a picture or record them...
Racialism is not a solution here, but educating men that they cannot harass women including a legal framework that punishes them for doing so is! Good job!

First of all get the Trishaw Driver's vetted from the Criminal Records from the local police station where they live or from the Police Central Records Nationally. Secondly, Nationally, ALL Trishaw drivers have to be registered and issued with an ID card with their corresponding Municipal/Village /Town Council along with a Unique Driver number thus to pay a small levy/Tax to be paid to the municipal council or inland revenue of that area where they operate their 3 wheels, from the money they earn on daily basis. This can be a small fraction rupees from the sum in day i.e. causing congestion to the major traffic or as revenue for the Government. At the moment NO Regulation or accountability for ANY Trishaw drivers. It has to be done with immediately or sorry to be than later - for the Road safety and Decent living civilised culture for other Road users Country as a whole thus to educate them how to behave in a devloping city like Colombo urban area. Why not apply this? Good luck
